There is now a real, concrete proposal for a casino (and video lottery) at Underground Atlanta. The proposal is from the developer who has the lease on Underground. The casino would directly benefit HOPE. Please read the article below:

Developer wants to build casino at Underground | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/stories/2009/01/13/underground_atlanta_casino.html?cxntlid=homepage_t ab_newstab - broken link)

What do y'all think? Great/good idea?

The Casino would definately need Vegas-Styled shows, games and attractions. Having video-only games will not work and they need the full Vegas Card games to be successful. Hopefully they can pull it off but how many "plans" have we seen over the year at The Underground that haven't come into fruition?

This try actually stands a chance of passing.

In the past, whenever anyone breathed the word "casino", the Georgia Lottery attorneys were immediately at the Capital Building, doing their thing with the elected officials to sway them against it. Casino=fewer lotto tickets sold=less profits for the Lottery, etc. For the greedier politicians, they only needed to quote how much profit they'd lose. For the more sympathetic politicians, they would use the, "Think of all the money the children will lose for their education", tactic to sway them against the idea.

By actually proposing that a casino be partnered with the Lottery Commission however, well, CA-CHING! $$$ signs in the heads. They'd get a portion of the profits, and they can use the argument that more money will go toward educational projects as well. Yes - this one stands a very real chance of passing if the developer plays their cards right.

Since the City pretty much decided to throw the Underground/Five Points area to the wolves a while back, this might be the kind of thing to get some new redevelopment kick-started around there (and cleaned up) again (finally).

Added: Atlantasfinest did make a point - people do prefer a "real" casino atmosphere (peopel dealing cards, etc) as opposed to just video slots and poker machines. However, they could team up with the Lottery and install the video machines now, without much if any special chances to the current laws to make it happen. Once you add human "dealers" to card and casino table games, legislation has to be completely changed in order to allow real casino stuff into an area - and that's much less likely to pass on the State level than what they're proposing. Back home in Charleston, WV this is what they did - Greyhound racing is legal, and they were able to add a second floor to the race track area with hundreds of video machines on it, without having to pass additional laws to do it. It's not as good as a Vegas style casino, but it does generate additional revenue, and it's certainly better than nothing if it's done right.

Find it hard to believe that this will fly in a place where you can't even buy a beer on Sundays.

Actually, Underground was never really a problem. Back when it first re-opened years ago, it was FULL of tourists and suburbanites for some time. Sure, it was basically just a glorified underground mall, but people thought it was neat.

The problem is the area AROUND Underground. Five Points has been allowed to deteriorate a lot since Underground re-opened. If the casino management makes the effort to hire good private police for the area, and if the proposed Japanese hotel in Five Points ever takes off, it could mark the beginning of a Five Points clean-up.

Meant to how many plans have we seen that haven't actually come into fruition?...I think most people know what I was getting at.
