Well, one of the biggest reasons people head up to the Dawsonville area is to go to the North Georgia Premium Outlet mall, here:

Just a very short drive North of Dawsonville is also the town of Dahlonega, which is a very neat 19th century style old goldrush town that has transformed it's town square into an area with artist's galleries, shops, hand-made jewelry, a few restaurants, etc. Well worth a day to explore. Site:
Dahlonega Chamber of Commerce and if you want to see some photos/video I have on Flickr of Dahlonega, you can see them at:

Helen is also a touristy town about a 30-40 minute drive NE of Dahlonega, but it's a bit more tacky-touristy than Dahlonega is. Still might be worth half a day's visit (there are some pics of it on that link above as well). It's supposed to look like an old German Bavarian village, though I'll bet German's would raise an eyebrow at that. Link:

There is also a Kangaroo sanctuary (yes, you read it right) in the Dawsonville area. If it's not too cold or hot, you can tour the grounds and see the largest number of Kangaroos walking around outside of Australia. Link:

That should keep you busy for at least two to three days.
