30310 and 30311, which are the zip codes we are looking at moving into... [moreso the 30310 zip code and the West End neighborhood, however this borders on the 30311 area.] We knew the crime rates would be high, but
4x the rate of the two worst crime zip codes in Minnesota? That surprised us!
We talked it over for awhile and decided we were still game to move to the West End, but we know we'll need to take extra precautions. It's good to know the West End has a private security patrol, we hadn't known that prior to this thread.
After pulling up the 30310/11 stats, we looked at 30307 - because we lived in Candler Park early in our marriag. Not all of 30307 is as fully "gentrified" as the neighborhood where we lived, which was a block from the park itself. Then again, not all of 55106 is "da hood", some of it is the neighborhood directly adjouning Lake Phalen.
Overall, the two neighborhoods ought to be roughly comparable... I guess I could dig deeper into median house prices, if I were to do that I suspect 30307 will have a higher median home price than 55106.
After that, I pulled up the stats for 30305, the zip code for Buckhead.
The numbers in 30307 and 30305 were slightly better than 30310, except their auto theft rates were much higher.... but they both still had nearly 3x the crime rate of the 55106 and 55411 zip codes.
I guess comparing Buckhead to Lake of the Isle, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet would be a more accurate, apples to apples, analysis... but we are not going to be living in Buckhead... I just wanted to see if the crime rates improved drastically if I considered a part of intown ATL with a significant different demographics than 30310.
I didn't compare suburban zip codes because we have no interest in moving to the suburbs.
