We moved here 12 years ago (just before the Olympics). We have only begun to explore everything the area has to offer. We love the climate and we never lack for things to do. We miss being near relatives, however. The move to Atlanta has had a very positive impact on our careers. The job market right now is tough, and I do hope that things start picking up again soon.
The only criticism I have is that the area grew too fast and the infrastructure didn't keep pace. Where we are now (Johns Creek) is terribly overdeveloped. We want to move somewhere else in the metro area that hasn't been spoiled (yet) by overdeveloping.

I'm so happy I made the decision to move here. I have no regrets.
I wish Georgia was a blue state but I can live with it. Thankfully, Atlanta is mostly an island of blue in a sea of red. Almost all of the states I've previously called home were politically conservative except for California. Unfortunately, I lived in the red/conservative areas of the state..
I did some post-graduate work in Utah many years ago, and that was a nightmare. It doesn't get much more red than that.
I love the diversity here and I view that as a plus.

Doesn't sound like you like diversity, you only like 'blue'

Yes, it was a good move. I hated living in Tampa Bay, and I refuse to move back to Mississippi.
I am in a career that I enjoy, and I am exploring opportunities to increase my professional development.
I will say that I am still considering a move to another city, but for the most part, I have enjoyed my move here.
It is hilarious that most of my friends here went to college with me, but I have met people here in the area. My social life here is a LOT better than what it was in Florida.

Darn! Make that UNIVERSITY. Just a little spelling error.
The majority of blue states support diversity for all of its citizens. For your information, I know a lot about diversity.
You might be very fond of blue, too, if you were the victim of a very brutal hate crime due to your sexual orientation. I was in a hospital for a week and I've never fully recovered, both physically and mentally, from the gay bashing crime.
Many red states have spent a lot of time and energy fighting gay hate crime legislation.
The police. blue in uniform but often times red in political affiliation, could have cared less about my beating. Surprise! They talked to me, when I was barely conscious, for maybe 25 seconds and made no attempt to solve the crime. They didn't even interview me a second time.
The reds in Washington and quite a few state capitals, many of whom are married and closet homosexuals, are using the GLBT community as pawns for their fascist agenda.

Nope, I'm still fond of red, but for the same reason as you, crime. I was kidknapped, assault, robbed right here in the great 'blue oasis' of Atlanta you describe. About the same reaction from the po-po as you.
Your post didn't promote diversity, it promoted 'blue' thinking.

I'm sorry to hear about your kidnapping and assault. During the kidnapping, I'm sure you feared the worst as to your possible fate. If you sustained physical injuries, I hope they were minor.
At least we can look on the bright side. We didn't get huge multimillion dollar lawsuit settlements and lose most of the money in the stock market, or in the real estate crash. Our relatives didn't bug us for a lot of money. We're so lucky! Yeah!
I would have sued my gay bashers had I known their identity. But that didn't happen since the crime wasn't solved. Due to the serious nature of the crime, I should have gotten millions. You should have got millions, too.
I have never been fond of red--even before my beating. Being a crime victim is not in the equation influencing my political affiliations. Not at all.

Back on Topic Folks
We are not going to turn this thread into a Political or Gay discussion.
The question is about your move to Atlanta.

Was my move a good one?
I voted no for one reason. With my approaching AARP membership age, my folks are 700 miles away needing more attention and being part of the old "never left their town depression generation" moving down here is a non-discussion. Add that with my wifes father who is also gaining in age, the same situation plus another 300 miles.
With the above removed. Overall I cannot say yes or no. How about yes and no
With my moves from locations such as Baltimore, Philly, NYC area, and Chicago to Atlanta and not living according to the Jones' my move to Georgia was good from a financial aspect since I oweth nothing to nobody.
I enjoy the mountains and the area has everything I need. The natives are good folks and for the most part so is everyone else.
Two items I do not like is the City of Atlanta. Never been much of a city person anyway but it reminds me much like when I lived in Baltimore. The leadership is poor, period. It is easy to compare to Philly when Rendell ran the town, NYC when Rudy ran the town, and ChiTown with tricky Dick. Love'm or hate'm these guys love their town and except nothing less. The leadership in Atlanta love themselves and their own self-interest more than they love Atlanta. My opinion.
The other is summer. Yes summer. Darn it's hot! I guess the good thing is when my Bar-b-Que runs out of fuel I can lay my steak on the patio concrete in July to finish to a nice medium well texture
Overall on a 1-10 scale? I vote this move 5 years now, a 6-7.

My move to Atlanta was not a good decision. But, I don't regret that I relocated; it's just a life experience. I can at least say that I tried it! Atlanta is not a bad place to live for some people. I realized that it's just not for everyone, including me. I've met really nice people; that's one thing that I'll always remember about Georgia. And, the beautiful scenery here in Paulding County.
