It seems to be a perspective thing to me. Yeah, Japan was in a long term economic slump, but remember, the Japanese think and live for the long term. Their society has socialized the economic problems so intricately that the pain would be spreaded relatively even and the end result is that no one really suffers true poverty.

It is our society that would rather have us throw each other to the wolves before we help each other. I look back to the history of the 1930's depression where so many people suffered and there was no "big government" type agencies like the Social Security Agency and the FDIC to offer regulation and protection. Where were the ultra-wealthy with their "donations"? Why so many tent cities in those days?

When I look at that type of history, "conservatives" will have a hard time convincing me that less taxes and no unionism is a great thing. There has got to be some sort of checks and balances on pure greed somewhere...

Would mandatory suicide make it better if these CEOs took a company to the ground? J/k

AcidSnake, Im with you 100%......

Does anyone know if Home Depot themselves, not Expo is laying off? Or will they send some Expo workers to some Home Depot stores, since people will still need service (not sure they'll get it there ). Or do people officially get their pink slips, and hit the unemployment lines? Sad

This article says:

"Most of the cuts affect workers at Expo Design Centers, YardBIRDS, Design Centers and HD Bath, a bath remodeling business. Combined, the four operate about four dozen locations.

Those chains' stores will close in the next two months. Liquidation sales are set to begin Tuesday morning, executives said."

and

"Home Depot's plans also include 2,000 cuts to non-store jobs, including 500 workers in its corporate headquarters, while freezing the pay of its officers."

This article says:

"But in a statement, the company says that during the next two months it plans to shutter 34 Expo Design Center stores, five YardBirds stores, two Design Center stores and seven HD locations. This will eliminate 5,000 jobs in the stores, support functions and distribution centers."

and

"The company said Monday it will continue its move toward a region- and district-based support model in field functions and will cut jobs in administrative functions in store support centers. The support reductions will eliminate 2,000 jobs and equal a 10 percent reduction in the company's officer ranks. It will not impact any customer-facing positions in Home Depot stores."

Etc.

I know that Monday's actions resulted in some HD merchants at Corporate HQ losing their jobs, as well as some IT people and some call-center people, and that roughly 20 upper management folks are retiring.
