You have French, Italian, Spanish, German, etc.
Most West African food will be very similar to Southerners as much of soul food has its roots west africa.
hearty Stews are very common in ghanan cuisine... and use simple ingredients that you should not have trouble finding.

Can you tell me some of the similarities ?

Perhaps...
I've heard good things about Imperial Fez...that will definitely be my fallback if I can't find some Ghanaian coastal fare. My guess is no, but I still have hope!

Nigerian/West African food can't be reduced to one single fufu meal you ate at a co-worker's house.. come on...lol! . First, there are soooo many other Nigerian meals - Nigerians don't just eat fufu. In fact I know some Nigerians who never eat fufu - and all they eat is Nigerian food(Not to say fufu is not yummy , but yep some ppl don't like it). So please don't totally turn everyone reading this off Nigerian /West African food just because you didn't like one meal you ate LOL. Also, "gross" is subjective lol, what's gross to you is absolutely delicious to someone else
It's kinda like me saying all North American food is gross because I ate a cheese sandwich I absolutely hated at McDonald's yesterday
To the OP, sorry I couldn't answer ur question...just had to respond to this comment though .

Well said, ATLHopeful! I agree with you completely. I recently went to Puerto Rico and had some awesome local food...plus one dish I didn't really care for. Would I say that all Puerto Rican food is gross? Of course not!

This is incorrect... I was born in Ghana and I don't think there's that much similarity between southern food and Ghanaian food... to the extent that we both use all parts of the animal in cooking, there is similarity but the cuisine is fairly different. We don't eat much fried food at all... most food is slow cooked in a stew or soup and eaten with a starch (plaintain, fufu, rice).
I have yet to connect with the Ghanaian community here... this city is just so big and spread out that it's hard to find folks... it was much easier in NY and S. Florida.

LOL... that's so funny... I always tell my Nigerian friends that their food sucks and cannot compare to Ghana's. As for local Ghanaian food, I've been told but have not yet confirmed that you can get Ghanaian groceries at Sweet Auburn Curb Market at Ama's Tropical... you can also apparently get Ghanaian lunch there as well. I've also heard rumor of a restaurant in Stone Mountain but have been unable to locate it. Where are you guys located? I can make some dishes but not nearly as good as mom or sister's.

Completely disagree. LOL. In my opinion, to my taste buds, so far..all the Nigerian food (Southern Nigerian in particular) I've tried tastes much much better than the Ghanaian food I've tried. More variety too. Many of the meals I've tried from both countries are very similar though. Does that mean Ghanaian food "sucks"? No..it just means I, personally, prefer Nigerian food...just as it appears you prefer food from Ghana.
But back to the point I was originally making, which it seems like you still didn't get...lol.. "gross" or "sucks" or "amazing" or "delicious" is always subject to the person doing the eating.
So be careful about making such generalizations because what sucks to you is absolutely delicious to many many others..."Nigerian food sucks" is just as rude (and as ignorant, because after all, how many Nigerian foods have you really tried?) as saying "West African food is gross" or "American food is disgusting"....etc. Especially after you've only tried a few meals. What is American food anyway? Or Nigerian? Or Ghanaian? There are sooo many different kinds of food in Nigeria, as there are in Ghana, as there are in America. So how can you so confidently say "Nigerian food sucks"? LOL. I don't know who's been feeding you what lol...but man, that is very wrong...you're the funny one .
