You're hosting a small nighttime weekend gathering at your home in modest, working-class neighborhood.

Guests park on the street. One of the guest's cars is vandalized with spray paint down one side of the car. No one else's car is bothered.

You've told the guests beforehand there is safe, on-street parking. (And that was an honest assessment at the time -- people park on the street every night there and still do). You have no reason to believe this was anything more than an unfortunate random event; homes and cars here don't have graffiti on them. You've had no instance of crime or vandalization until now.

Do you have an ethical obligation here? I know there's no legal one, but ethically speaking, do you have an moral one since you extended the invitation? How would you feel as the host and as the guest whose car was vandalized?

I don't think so...I mean you assume a certain amount of risk when you park your car on any public street. If it had occured on your property then you would be liable (or your home owners insurance).

I agree with previous post. Nobody expected this to happen and I'm sure you've already expressed your surprise and probably even apologized but it is a public street and stuff happens.

Welcome to Comprehensive Car Insurance.
If it was reported to the Police the owner can have it fixed and his/her rates will not go up.
Depending on deductable out of pocket may be minimal.

What is the occasion? Why am I having all these people over? Do I have to feed them and provide alcohol? How long are they staying?

Do I like the person with the vanadalized car?
