IT Jobs in Atlanta
Can anyone tell me how is the IT job market in Atlanta or Georgia in general? I am a Quality Assurance Analyst and thinking moving to either North Carolina or Georgia from New York. Looking for low crime areas with reasonable rent, about $600 a month, close to public transportation.

How much rent are you paying in NY ? $600.00 monthly rent is the stuff of pipe dreams. Low crimes areas ? You gotta be kidding. There's muggings, carjacking, robberies, rapes in all of metro Atlanta-every day.
Nothing in your post fits the Atlanta criteria....why do you want to move?

I pay $1000 per month. Cannot afford a home in NY. Looking for some where to rent short-term, while checking out areas to by. Is Atlanta really that horrible?

IT industry in Atlanta is best described as "lukewarm". There are multiple job centers in Atlanta (midtown, downtown, Marietta, Norcross, Alpharatta and Dunwoody). Try to locate a job before coming down here.
One bedroom in safe neighborhood in suburb is around 800 a month. Probably more in the city. That's just going rate here since Atlanta has a lot of people. Maybe you can find a roommate if you want lower price.
Sorry to give you bad news. Atlanta is really not as cheap as people think (at least in the nice area).

Also public transportation in the Atlanta area is pretty pathetic. Most of the area isn't served by any sort of bus system, and the areas that are don't have great service. The rail system is also limited, only serving a small part of the city of Atlanta (not the metro area). Suburban counties have their own transit systems which are mostly just an express bus service to Atlanta with extremely limited local bus service. If you are planning on relying on transit you are going to want to live and work in Atlanta, Dunwoody or Decatur.

Our local liberal newspaper Atlanta Journal-Constitution for years, used to have a box listing all the crimes from the day before. There was a squad aimed at muggings downtown. The cops dressed up like bums and pretended to be drunks. The cops caught so many blacks that the sting was discontinued. Due to political correctness the AJC no longer carries this feature. All of the crimes were committed by blacks...and ,there was an outcry by the black leadership complaining it put blacks in a bad light. There is not one nightly newscast that doesn't feature a crime story.
Even in the suburbs where one would think it would be relatively safe, there's crime. The city denizens move into the suburbs and bring their thuggery ways with them.
I hate to sound so negative...however, the above is fact.
In the North you have safe areas where one can take a walk in safety. Not in Metro Atlanta.
Before moving to Atlanta....take a week or so and check it out.
We are living in a permissive society with excuses made for the worst behavior. No city exemplifies this more than Atlanta.

$800.00 sounds high to me. We're paying $745.00 for 2 beds and baths in a nice complex and what I would not describe as a "BAD" area.
Girlie I would suggest you do some research using sites such as apartmentguide.com. Or you even try to order one of their magazines. Do you know anyone in the area? They can be the best resource of all if you do.

Let me correct that. 800 is starting point for Northeast (Duluth, Dunwoody and their surrounding area) side of Atlanta. Maybe that are cheaper apartments in other part of Atlanta.
Kayrob, maybe you can tell her which part of Atlanta you would recommend for affordable apartment.

Well she can look into Douglas County. Especially if she's going to be working downtown as the commute wouldn't be that bad then. But it's all gonna come down to where she's gonna work. I can't speak too much for area on the East or Northeast side but there are a lot of apartments here in the Lithia Springs area that would start in the 600-700 range because they're always running specials for incentives due to the competition being so fierce due to this being such a growing area of the Metro. We actually got the lease on our apartment for substantially less than what it was listed at in the book so you just have to make the stop to inquire if you see a place that appeals to you.

^gotta co-sign on that. I was renting in 2003-2004 when I first moved here and I lived in Lithia Springs in a newer complex and paid about...730 a month for a 2/2 1100 sq ft apt. And it was very safe.
