Default A question about natural gas meters ...

I feel stupid for asking, but ... Should I be able to HEAR the gas flowing through the apparatus/meter outside my rental home? I can hear it when it comes on. I've felt all around it and don't feel a leak or smell anything.

I've had really high gas bills - $168 for one month for a house of less than 1,000 square feet. I figured it was the sorry '50s insulation. But when I heard the gas, that made me wonder if I'm losing some of it.
