I'm sure this is partly due to the bad economy and rising gas prices, but other cities have had to deal with the same economy and prices. Atlanta is now #12 and guess what...NYC and Chicago...those examples of near perfect rapid transit are now #2 and #3 while Boston and Seattle are #8 and #9 respectively.

Huh. Even the Twin Cities is worse than Atlanta this year at #10. Wow.

They are not "now" 2 and 3. They were 2 &3 last year too.

And why we are comparing densified metro areas with much larger populations to Atlanta is not clear. What we should look at is number of hours in traffic per capita. I bet that statistic would be more telling.

They list Atlanta at 5+ million for population and only 4 cities on the top ten are higher then 5's (million) - NY, LA, Chicago and Dallas.

Based on the travel time index they rate atlanta as #19.

This is definately true. I started taking Marta when gas prices went up, but had to drive to work Tuesday, traffic flow was great, not like how I remembered it last year. I hope it continues.

I agree. Atlanta has bad traffic but its like any normal city its size. The only reason most people think that Atlanta has bad traffic is because Atlanta has more interstate lanes than most cities. Traffic looks worse if you are in 7 lanes of traffic verse 4 lanes. You can be in another city in 4 lanes of traffic traveling at 5 mph but if you are in Atlanta in 7 lanes of traffic going 10 mph, those same people will say Atlanta traffic is worse even though you are going faster
