And many "people"(Im not using hood/ghetto people again in my posts) want to get out of those situations but do not have the means or resources to do it. We are not a violent "culture" and we are not defined by "hip hop" and the American "gangster". That a mainstream depiction.
Man you just dont know how i be feeling when i mentor some of the children. The stories I hear, the problems I see. The actions people do not take. I be feeling bad on the inside but i try to show them strength/encouragement on the outside. A big portion of my allowance ( I know I am in college and still get a allowance) goes to the children I big brother and mentor. I try to show them positivism and take them to Alpharetta/Cascade to see success stories, be it white/black/asian, the mall to buy something, movies, restaurants, museums, etc, . I preach on education. Even if it is barber school. I want them to have some type of certificate, trade, associate, bachelor, etc.
This is what we need in the black community instead of the negative.
I don't think Blacks are a "violent" culture. There are people who have put violence in the culture(such as the rappers who sold out).
I will say this. If Dr. King was alive today, there would be a mix of pride and disappointment. Dr. King would be proud of you for showing the children you mentor that they can aspire to higher things. I think he would be very disappointed in the heavy amount of materialism in American culture. He would be saddened by some other things. Dr. King, being a preacher, could very well see the visible proof of this Biblical verse: 1 Timothy 6:10 says the love of money is the root of all evil. Dr. King would find this extremely evident in the high levels of Black on Black violence. Dr. King would be very happy to see the Black middle class has grown. His disappointment would come from seeing an even larger gap between the haves and have-nots.
Dr. King had a saying: "If you haven't found something worth dying for, you aren't fit to be living". Dr. King was willing to die for his cause, and in the end died for his cause. I think he would disappointed that there aren't more leaders who would stick their necks out for people, that there are so many leaders who can be bought off.
Dr. King wasn't too happy about America's involvement in Vietnam. I could only imagine how he would feel about America's involvement in Iraq.
As for what you are doing, more of that needs to happen.
Look, we can debate this forever. The plain fact is, there is no such thing as a black Germany, a black Norway, a black South Korea, or even a black Poland. Not even close. Moreover, there is no white version of a Hati, or Zimababwe or Somalia. The difference is frankly stark, and pervasive, the world over.
The bottom line is that western culture is the premier culture for building well functioning, advanced, organized and relatively prosperous societies, whether around the world, or here in the US. The evidence is pverwhelmingly supportive of this. Note I didn't say perfect, or always, but certainly the larger point cannot be reasonably argued.
The other aspect of this is the frustration many of us feel about the anger and resentment expressed by many blacks toward whites. From our perspective, the societies based on western civilization are some of the greatest in history, and yet there is all this rage, as if others would have done it better, or our success is only the result of slavery and other abusive practices. Never mind that most of these have been abolished, and no one living had anything to do with them.
Given that being angry at dead people doesn't make much sense, it would seem the wisest move for minority groups would be to embrace the culture that has enriched the lives of, literally, billions, around the world. While some have done this, a sizeable portion have not. Their lack of cultural assimilation is a drag on the rest, and causes many terrible problems. And guess what? White folk can't fix this. It has to come from within the black community. We welcome those who embrace our values, our customs, our cultural norms, our standards of behavior and such. Consider this a racist rant if you like, but it contains more truth than 99% of liberal esque theories as to why racial integration is lacking.

Im very pragmatic.I see things as they are as you seem to do.I never singled out western culture for its violent path to glory.Its human nature.Some people somewhere will suffer at another with more power.Whether its African clans against other Africans or Europeans against Africans.
The difference is you leave out all context as if it has no bearing for why things are the way they are.Even when there are very logical solid reasons and explanations.

Ill refresh those question so you can answer mine first and you will have your answer. Why is it been a fact that many scientist and professionals over the last 300 years have systematically downplayed or just outright lie so they could prove some type of superiority over blacks.Only now in the age of non racial bias research are you seeing how bad those lies were and are.
If we know there are so many example of racial prejudice in archaeology,history and science.Why is it so hard to believe that because of those prejudices we simply have lost so much to even recover what was destroyed or never even looked for?
3.Western cuture
I said basically it had help.Help due to geography,political,topography as well as other races.Many after being conquered by force.I.E.Egypt.I have NO problem admitting as it seems that Western Cultire has given us so may advances.More than any particular race.But why are YOU singling out the "African" race as non contributers.
Do you realize that Africa is the ONLY continent where its land and people have been attacked by people on their own soil by Western culture ove a longer period of time than any other place on the planet?
Western Culture has had a fascination with Africa un-paralleled anywhere else in the world

How many native Americans,African Slaves,Aboriginals or Indians have been killed by Europeans?What other cultures can come close to having decimating so many people as Western Culture has?
Then why do you call yourselves African Americans? YOUR people demanded that. I'm certainly no expert on African culture. But I've heard that recent African immigrants often try and distance themselves from black American culture because they find it not to their liking.
