Default New Car Tax Proposal

Battle coming over birthday tax | Gold Dome Live

Quote:
Under legislation the House will consider, people who buy vehicles starting next year won’t pay property taxes on those cars. They also wouldn’t pay a sales tax they’d normally pay if they bought from a dealer. To replace those taxes, all buyers will have to pay a fee of 7 percent, up to a maximum of $2,000, when they title their vehicles.
Georgians who keep their present cars will still have to pay the annual property taxes until they buy another one.
Thoughts?

I don't understand why GA can't charge a registration fee like MD. That fee covered our trauma centers and medevac helicopters and whatever hole the rest of the money went which is $128 and $180 for car and suv's and that is for 2 years!

We have a world class trauma network to show for it. GA already charges an arm and leg in ad valorem taxes and nothing to show for it (the trauma network here is a damn joke).

It could work out to be a good deal if you keep your car long enough, and I'd like to see if the fee is paid on the full purchase price or just the net price after trade (if a trade is involved). The fee would only be 1% higher than the normal sales tax here in Cobb.

So in GA, you don't have to pay sales tax if you buy your car from a private party? That's a loophole they ought to close and this would do that.

Sweet Atlanta Peach is on a distinguished road
It sucks because I don't plan on buying another car anytime soon (the goal most people have is to pay a car off and keep a title) so I could careless.

I've always thought the car tag thing was ridiculous considering all you have to do is have an address to get your car registered cheaper. So if I live in Fulton and don't want to pay the high tag, I will just use the address of one of my relatives and get it hundreds of dollars cheaper. So, I may be a Fulton resident, but if my tag is cheaper in Butts County or Douglas (which by the way, it is almost $150.00 cheaper in Douglas County than Fulton) then that's where my car will be registered.
