Been visiting a few times trying to figure out where to live in this huge place! Finally decided on Buford, close to the Mall of Georgia, 5 minutes to work! =) Mill Creek Schools???? Harmony Elem! Hope we made a wise choice.
Also, I have a special needs child, 5th grade. Anyone know of how the special education services are there? She has a brain injury, looks and functions normal, but is by no means normal, needs extra services due to Auditory Processing Disorder, ADHD, Cognitive Delay, Expressive & Receptive Language delays. (again, but looks and acts perfectly normal until you get to know her...and then she shows her a*&.

Moving next week, so don't delay! Thank you kindly for all your help!

You could not have made a better choice. Buford is a great place to live and my nephew attends Mill Creek. You will be quite impressed with it. The special education programs are excellent in Gwinnett. Make sure to set her up for an IEP program. Because Georgia does require testing on the CRCT for promotion to the next grade.

My oldest attends Mill Creek (freshman) and before Mill Creek he went to Jones Middle. My youngest started in Harmony when we first moved to Buford about 4 years ago. Once Patrick Elem. opened he was transfered there, he is in 4th now. We have loved living here, making friends and planting some roots! Both kids have IEP's, and have been in special ed classes since they were school aged. We are a retired military family so we traveled for some time, and I have dealt with quite a few special ed departments in varying states. I have found Gwinnett County (particularly the schools in the Mill Creek cluster) to be very helpful and efficient in regards to IEP's.
Like any state thou...you have to be the advocate for you child. This isn't private school...in my experience if you aren't fully participating certain things just wont happen. But really they are very accomadating..I work 40+ hours a week, am a single Mom and they always have time for me to call and talk about either of the kids issues.

My only "beef" is the new High school graduation requirements. Its either a special ed diploma or a college prep one. My child is just in the grey area...so of course I have an issue. He functions with help in mainstream classrooms and should be able to attain more then a special ed diploma...however he is really struggling with the college prep requirements. Tech school is an alternative but not one we really wanted to entertain. So anyway...thats my only beef.

I hope you enjoy your move! Its always so exciting!
