Are other people's water bill as ridiculous as mine? I live off Northside Dr right by I-75 in a duplex with 8 bedrooms. The average water/sewage bill is between $200-$250/month. Any one else, or am I being screwed?

Looking at the bill, water is around $65 and sewer charges around $165.

Well, you are being screwed, and in more ways than one. The Atlanta water bills are outrageous, no doubt. I still can't understand how my $5.00 in water consumption turns into a $35.00 bill. The multipliers for "usage" are just a rip-off so the city can recoup revenue lost by people conserving water so effectively. I also can't understand how X water consumption turns into 3X in sewer fees. I may be "full of it", but I'm not THAT full.

As far as the bill itself, you need to check and see if you are not being billed for both units. You might also have a leak somewhere. That amount sounds high to me.

In June 2009, we received a water bill from the city of Atlanta amounting to over $3000. Our normal water bill (3 people living in a townhouse)is about $40. We called and they told us to just pay the regular amount ($40) until they can resolve the issue. Every month when we receive a bill we called and they told us the same thing until finally in October, we demanded they send somebody to check the meter. THey finally sent somebody to read the meter and the result was we have a leak. The person they sent did not make sure there was nobody using water in the house. There was no obvious leak but we dicided to ask two independent plumbers (one charged us $175 and the other $150). Both plumbers said there was no leak, whatsover. We submitted the results to the city but they said it can be an invisible leak. We told them how come the bill of $3000 was only for June and there was no repair made, how come the the bill was significantly lower in the succeeding months? They want to negotiate for the June bill but said we have to pay the subsequent bills which is about $800/month from July to November as there is clearly a problem. They said that the nature of the problem is clearly an increase of consumption. They told us to file a form to set up a meeting with them. This problem has cost us a lot of time, money and effort. Please help us solve this as they will cut our water if we don't pay by January 30, 2009. Thank you

Even though I'm not always a fan of the profession, I would seriously consider talking to a lawyer.

A duplex with 8 bedrooms? Are there 8 members in your household? Our 2 person household uses about $50 worth of water a month, so if your household has 8 members in it I could see the bill reaching $200 - $250. Additionally, water rates are tiered, so the more you use the more you pay. The tier fees are here: http://www.atlantawatershed.org/custsrv/Rate/2008-09%20to%202012%20Rates%20&%20Bill%20Calc.pdf (broken link)
