Although Atlanta was a refreshing place for African American Culture, it was traumatic for survival. GA is NOT a liberal state. It has poor state assistance, BAD traffic, school are Ok but no free afterschool programs, and the job market is saturated with highly educated individual making low wages in order to maintain a lifestyle in HOTTLAnta. Because of Atlanta, (sad to say) I have great survival skills. Two years ago, I relocated to the Minnesota Twin cities with fifty cents in my pocket and no one but my 8 year old daughter. I stayed in a NICE DV shelter by the lake and in downtown Minneapolis. And in less than two months I found two jobs, an apartment and a car! God is good and so am I! You all can do it TOO ! But not in the ATL! I am now looking for a liberal state with WARMER climate, a better job market and socially adequate for a southern AA Mom such as myself. Hope you are inspired...

Sabrina

Sorry to hear about your experience. But it seems for every one of your's there are 10 that would have the opposite take. Good luck.

I might be inspired -- if the story ended with you being willing to put down roots in that wonderful place and "pay forward" into the system that helped you when you most needed it. Just some food for thought.

Sabrina...

I am a single mom who is now expecting and I want to finish my master's degree. I am wondering if you know of any programs out there that will help subsidize my education/living expenses while I finish my program and raise my children? Anything you can think of would be appreciated!

I love Florida - have attempted living there twice now. I know one day I'll set up camp down there for good.

Keep on keeping on!

What are you talking about? It was easy to find a job here compared to other cities. This is the easiest place I've ever had to survive.

Try living in NYC, LA, or San Fran and THEN tell me about survival (especially the first two, as they have lower median incomes and extremely high COL).

However, I'm happy to see you're happy.

Well, I'm sad to hear your story, but that's not like my experience with Atlanta at all. I've practically had everything handed to me. But I guess I'm not a single mother struggling to survive... that would be hard anywhere.

I would sugest for you to look into the section 8 program. Some people are condecending about it but it will subsidize your housing expenses and you can live anywhere in the US! Also, there are alot of universities that have housing for families completing a masters degree. google studant housing for families.

Come on, you want to send someone with Masger's degree to Section 8 program? There must be something wrong if education is not worth anything. I have seen many college graduates are well off in this town. Everything is possible. Looking at all busy restraurants and shopping malls. There are tons of jobs available for anyone to grab.

Work is a requirement for the program... Your rent is subsidized to your income. If her income is not much because she is completing her degree she pays less. Get a life Hater! She has many options..

I think parts of this show part of the problem, though.

You should not move here based on how good "state assistance is", and that shouldn't be a factor in rating how good a place is to live, either. "Assistance" is meant to be temporary for those who need a temporary helping hand - nothing more. Likewise, we don't live in a Socialist society here, so "free childcare" is also not something we get by being citizens. Maybe we should, but, it's not - most pay for it.

I've known numerous people who have come here and live fine. If they made it beyond High School, they have a place, have a car, and most I know have very nice careers. I've only known one person with a higher level of education who wasn't able to find work here, but it was a very specialized technical sector type job, so he moved to California and was snagged up immediately. Other than that, others I know here with Masters or PHDs are working very nicely. Those with only high school diplomas I know still work and have no problems finding work - many of them have kids - some may need a roommate to afford better places, etc., but they all do it. No one I know here has had to say on public assistance for more than a few weeks at most, and that was if they were laid off without warning from a job, etc - they rebounded soon after.

Atlanta has a lot of bad things (traffic, smog, crime, etc), but being able to work outside of the welfare system is not one of the problems here. Even if you are single with a child. You may not be able to drive a Lexus and live in a high rise in Buckhead, but unless you have a physical issue that keeps you from working full time, or have a super specialized field you're trained in, there are few reasons to be unemployed and on long term assistance here.

I think it's good that you found a way to support yourself elsewhere and are making it, but I just don't agree with rating a city based on assistance programs.
