Default Break up Clayton County?

Why not?

GA has way too many counties as it is, and I'd be in favor of paring back the number of counties by say, 40%? That could result in some big time savings for the state.

As for Clayton, this county is an absolute failure. The schools are no longer certified. Local government (and the school board) are an absolute joke. So let's use Clayton as a "test" for getting rid of a county.

I'd say give the northern half to Fulton County, and the Southern half to Henry or Spalding. Or give it all to Fulton. Why not....it couldn't be any worse than it is now?

I've been thinking that for a while maybe given the northern portion twhich is the area north of 138 and west of 54 to fulton. give everyting east of 54 and tara and south of fayetteville rd in jonesboro to henry county. and everything west and north of fayetteville rd and west of tara and south of 138 to fayette

Just a though I've had for a couple of years

There are precedents for this, after all...Campbell and Milton Counties were absorbed into Fulton County in the 30's. Frankly, I'd like to see GA consolidate its' counties down to about 50. FL (a much larger state in terms of population) only has 67, and GA has 159.

This is a common sense approach that I totally agree with. I grew up in Clayton county and have seen my hometown steadily go downhill over the last few decades! The only problem with this is that Henry, Fayette or Spalding county would pitch a fit if they had to absord half of Clayton county and all of that counties problems. Dont really know what Fulton would do but I can imagine it would give people in the northern part of Fulton more ammunition in wanting to split away and form Milton county.

Yeah, who would want that headache? Can the State take over a county? Then again, the state politicians are a joke as well...

I think building a wall around Clayton county would be something that all of it's neighboring counties could agree on! LOL

You might get a county to take them in if they can strip away the voting rights of the current Clayton residents. They have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they do not deserve to vote.
