Of course it's related to football, as your own post explains.

If football is going to generate revenue in the long term, GSU should not be placing the start up costs on the backs of it's current students, unless the students are going to be reimbursed, with interest, just like any other business loan. Are these fees going to be removed once start up costs have been payed? HIGHLY unlikely.

Has anyone else noticed the lack of college football programs at universities within the state compared to other states? Still only two Division I programs in GA, neighboring AL has 4, TN 4, NC 5, FL too many to count in my head. GA has only one other I AA program in GA Southern.

For one of the largest states in the nation and a hot bed for high school football, this is sad. No program at any private Universtity either (Mercer, Emory) to compare to Duke, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Tulane in Div I or Furman, Samford, Richmond, etc in I AA (forgive me for using the old designation).

Kennesaw State with over 20,000 in enrollment is another school that ought to have at least a I AA program. Have heard rumblings of this, any news on this?

As much as the nay sayers protest, a football program helps put a University on the map. All the best to Georgia State. Wish they were in a more southern oriented conference. Would be nice to see them in the Southern Conference and let the states two GSUs develop a strong rivalry.

Albany State, Fort Valley State and Savannah State, Clark Atlanta University & Morehouse College all participate in Div II Football and all have a great following relative to their size.

Both Albany State & Fort Valley currently have players in the NFL and before desegregation of the SEC and ACC were Pro Football factories and powerhouses to be reckoned with.

Florida State is basically on the state line and they get tons of players from South GA . So does FSU count?

if there was another Div 1school in South GA I think they would do fairly well.

Great point, I did not get to the division II schools. Still, based on their size and comparing to neighboring states, schools in GA that are I AA (Georgia Southern and now Georgia State) would be Division I in another state (would say State is superior to UAB and Southern as superior to Troy in Alabama) and the division II schools are comparable to I AA in other states.

Just don't understand why Georgia programs have lagged behind other, smaller southern states. Georgia Southern should at least be a Division I School on the likes of a Southern Miss or Troy or Memphis or South Florida, not quite SEC calibre, but more than I AA.

I guess a school like GA Southern could do well and compete in Conference USA. Georgraphically they would be very isolated from the football schools in that conference unless those football mid-major conferences expanded I.e. Northern an southern or eastern/western divisions like the SEC and ACC currently has set-up to include Ga State & GA Southern in the future.

GA State raises this fee along with the technology fee EVERY semester. I'm not disputing that the football program will receive a portion of the funds, I truly do not know. What I do know is when you implement a football program, you introduce 40-50 scholarships for males. That means you either have to eliminate other male only sports, such as wrestling, baseball, mens tennis, or create additional female sports, otherwise, you would be inviolation of NCAA Title IX. Whether this merits an increase in fees, I'm not here to debate. I however was only trying to illustrate that the fee increase could possible be unrelated to football start up cost. With that being said GO Panthers!

Will be interesting to see how well they'll be able to recruit in an area already ripe with established football programs.

As someone already pointed out, there aren't many Division I football programs in Georgia...especially not for the amount of high school football talent here. It will be nice for players to have another option rather than choosing Clemson, Florida State, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and other out of state schools. Georgia State already took a big step toward recruiting when they hired Bill Curry...it will definitely be a plus to have high profile coach. It looks like they signed a pretty decent class for next year, getting 3 players from the top 150 in Georgia.
