That is a legit concern. Southerners have a different lifestyle from the rest of the country. Many pros and cons, but with internet and tv there really is no point is being behind anyone.

I lived in JAX and moved to ATL and I am originally from up north. Now, I have come to find it is a matter of preference, living in ATL to me is no different than living JAX in some cases, the south is the south. I for one do not like either place and I am making arrangements to back home asap.
But I will say this there are allot of northerns here in ATL but for some reason to me it is not the same. The people here sought of change or maybe adapt to the environment here. My problem is the sought of discrimination here is very different that up North. Here discrimination can be a big set back while up North discrimination exist but it has never been so evident, and nor has it been such a set back for me.
The homes are great, and the prices are wonderful, but the salary is so when you only make 10.00 a hour and your rent in a nice neighborhood is 1400 to 1600 you have only one choice trade one ghetto for another that you can afford to live off with 10.00p/hr . Well to me, I mine as well live in NY. because it is trading one rat race for another. At least I can obtain my degree and move up, back home, where as here color will alway be a big question mark. It not just what is your education and what do you know. here it is who do you know? what color are you? and this will dictate where you live!
So there is no one answer somethings will not change in my life time or yours. But this one thing I will tell you I for one dont have the time to try and explain to anyone how equal I am to them, I am me, color and all so take it or leave it.

Missny is correct. The lifestyles are the same, the mindset is a little more advanced in Atlanta, The whites are identical in a lot of ways. I understood what the OP was trying to say, but you labeled this topic wrong and by accident he is offending some of the southern posters on here. I am southern, but again I am not offended by what Mike is saying. I won't pick on spelling or anything like that because I can relate to the intention of the OP. The main issue is some blacks think out the box and some are very limited in there view point of life. The OP just made the mistake of calling the limited minds southerners. Some blacks you could give them 10,000 $ cash and they may invest some, do some traveling, repair credit etc, other blacks would take that same 10.000 and repaint a 1993 Chevy Caprice, put loud speakers in the trunk, put tvs in it, USE IT AS THEIR MAIN VEHICLE and guess what the Caprice is still the blue book value. I wouldn't be so hard on the OP, just using the wrong words to make their point. No harm no foul.

There are some cultural differences between northern blacks and southern blacks, but I try not to generalize and put whole groups of people in boxes. I would say, as a southern black female myself, the overall friendliness of all races is what attracts me to the people down south more than up north. I find black people in general in Atlanta to be more professional and rather "worldly." There's quite a bit of stereotyping in some previous posts that are really comparing how people act among different classes. Class has more of an effect than geography in that respect.
As far as general race relations up north and down south, racism is going to be wherever you move. However, while Atlanta is segregated, I never experienced the overt racism one would expect in the south. Further, if you think about it, how many major cities lack segregation? Even the most "diverse" cities, like LA or NY have very segregated neighborhoods.
Because Atlanta's in the south, people like to highlight it more more, but growing up it did not feel racially tense. My best buddies growing up were white, black, Indian, even Bosnian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese chicks. I enjoyed the diversity of my high school (about 40% black, 20-30% white, and solid percentages of everyone else) and we interacted very much. Statistically, the county I grew up in (Dekalb) was the second most diverse in the country.
I personally feel more racial tension in New York City than I did in Atlanta, of course things are different when you're thinking about employment and housing, but at least socially during my childhood I did not feel that kind of racist vibe.
