Is Being a Black Mecca a positive or negative for Atlanta?
Do you think Atlanta's status as a "Black Mecca" is a net positive or negative for the City?

i think it hurts your citys reputation nationally. people equate black areas with being dangerous even though thats totally false. i'm white and visted your city last week and i found everyone to be very friendly and never felt threatned. actually im thinking about moving there but people tell me not to because its all blacks and dangerous. atlantas a great place.

It could see it as both a positive and a negative.
but people tend to only look at the poor of the city and judge a city by that

positive... gives the city something to distinguish itself and provides a haven for AA owned businesses. being the home of MLK, i don't see it ever losing its title.

I'm rather surprised with the results of this poll thus far.

I'm not. There are people who have a problem with black people congregating together in an area. There are those who are trying to find success and unite with other professionals, but you'll get the riff-raff ruining it for everyone else.
I guess they think we're cooking up some sort of revolution or figuring out ways to enslave white people over a dinner of fried chicken and watermelon that we bought with our EBT cards, cause we know that us black folks don't have jobs . Who knows?
Back on Topic: I'll say that it has its positives and negatives. Positive in terms of knowing this is a place that black professionals can have a leg up compared to other parts of the country and be in areas where being middle-class or upper middle-class and happening to be black is the rule rather than the exception. From the perspective of black people, that can be pretty refreshing depending on where they came from.
It can be negative in the light of people think that just because they're black, they have an automatic ticket to success here in Atlanta. No dice. This isn't the land of milk and honey, and classicism between the haves and have-nots is pretty bad here. People come here with expectations of what Atlanta is supposed to do for them rather than what they can do for Atlanta and wind up being disappointed..
And isn't this the 4th or 5th thread about Atlanta being a black mecca? Who cares? There are other threads that have dissected this to death. If people have a problem with living in an area that is attractive to black people (for whatever reasons), find somewhere else to live. Moving to Atlanta and complaining about all the black people here would be like moving to Utah and complaining about there being too many Mormons/LDS.

I have never met a single black person in Atlanta that felt entitled to success. However, I have met countless black people from all over the country who visit and are amazed at the relative success on blacks in this city.

I think it depends on who you ask, and on how realistic their image is before coming here.
Is it the land of milk and honey? No.
Is it a place where one can meet blacks of all types, income levels, and other persuasions, and where black kids can find positive role models? Probably.
Not being black, of course, I'm just guessing. But I personally don't see that label as a negative.
