How can I get to ATL w/o having a car?
I want to transfer to go to school in Atlanta but my mom won't let me have the car. I don't have any money to buy a new car. I don't have any support from my family. It's so frustrating wanting to go somewhere but can't go.
Is there any kind of public transportation I can use? I live 120 miles south of Atlanta.
Please help me! Moving to ATL is my dream!

Well, you can of course catch Greyhound TO Atlanta, and once here you can ride MARTA (the public transit system): MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority
However, there's more to it than just transferring from one college to another (assuming you're in college). Atlanta's a very expensive place to live, so you need to think out a whole lot more than just how to get around before such a big move.

I agree that you can catch a greyhound bus or you could at least find a ride to get to Atlanta, but 1st you need to have a place lined up to move whether on campus or in a rental which should be easy to find near any campus and 2nd you need a job to support yourself since you are not getting help elsewhere. I disagree with the previous writer, Atlanta is actually one of the cheapest major metropolitan areas to live, coming to Atlanta would be a good move for anyone, just have your ducks in a row.

Since you are still in school and not able to afford a car, I would suspect you are pretty young. Why can't you go to Atlanta after you graduate and have a job there? I fear you are setting yourself up for some hardship and hurt.

I've been thinking about Greyhound. That means I have to drive to Macon (45 mins) to catch the bus. I have to see what my mom says about that since it's her car.
As far as finding a place to live, I have a grant that pays for on campus housing.
Thanks for the info!

You could rent a car just to get you here (to Atlanta) then once you are here Marta, Marta, Marta! Yes Atlanta can be expensive if you post yourself up in a highrise overlooking the city OR since you are in school there is no need to live above your means. The finer homes will come in time. I lived in a carrriage house (600 sq ft in someone's backyard) $550 per month ALL utilities included. The location was perfect...Peachtree/Piedmont Hospital area. Stay on Craigslist daily looking for something cheap. Then get a waitress/waiter job at one of the finer restaurants in Buckhead...Chops, Capital Grille, Buckhead Diner, The Palm...you will survive the city!
Good Luck with getting here and with school.

I'm a business major. And @ the school I want to go to (GSU) they have one of the best business schools in the south. Corporations downtown work closely w/ GSU's business schoool. Plus Atlanta has more opportunities than down here in the cotton field section of GA.
I just don't want to regret later on in life that I didn't take advantage of a great opportunity that I had when I was younger all because of what somebody else wanted me to do.

I've been thinking about renting a car also. But I'm 18 and a lot of car rental agencies don't let people under the age of 25 rent cars. Some do. But it's hard trying to find one in my area.
I won't be living like I'm some kind of big shot. Trust me I'm cheap!

I've been trying to find a ride but it's hard relying on other people. I think Greyhound would probably be the cheapest.
Thanks for the info!
