Yeah, I would be more moved if they would have done this when Bush and Cheney said 'deficits don't matter'. I know FOX has been hyping this so I expect a good turnout in Atlanta with Hannity broadcasting from there... but it looks to me that it has morphed into a catch-all Obama-bashing fest...

Stole the words right out of my mouth. I just wish that these same folks had this much fire when it decided that the deficit for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts would be payed for by the next generation. Maybe they could've also headed off that first 350 billion dollar bailout of Wall Street at the pass.

Better late than never, I guess!

I was at the one in downtown Augusta, where atleast 5,000 people attended. From the TV, it looks like Atlanta had one of the biggest turnouts in the country.

Actually, most of the people in the Southern states have been complaining for years, even under Bush. With all the bailouts there's just more people pissed and people have started to get off their lazy rears. Fox did help give them more of a platform, but I voted for Huckabee mainly b/c he supported the fairtax.

There's been fairtax rally's for several years, just no news agencies gave them much coverage.

I do find it funny that most of the other news agencies have insulted the protesters. I'm done with CNN, I've been done with MSNBC, but for Cooper to say, 'It's hard to talk when you're tea bagging', is pretty bad. CNN should also suspend the reporter who called the protester that she wouldn't let answer, 'Anti-Govt', 'Anti-CNN'

It's sad b/c I grew up on CNN and wish them to do well here in Atlanta, but they're done for. Ted Turner even recognizes this.

Are some ideological people riding the coat tails of the protest, yes. But to glorify UNC students disrupting an invited guest to speak on illegal immigration but then chastises people and makes sexual references on a major news network speaks volumes of the new bias. Especially when all they want is lower taxes. Who doesn't want lower taxes? They're not saying no taxes, they're saying lower and fair taxes and reduced spending. Both sides are guilty on that.

And it didn't help that Obama's entire cabinet didn't pay their taxes all the while distributing tax payer money. I

I say the next tea parties should be held outside the HQs of CNN and MSNBC.

Default Tea party question

My question is -

Are only rich conservatives, going to the Tea Parties, as a protest for why wealth shouldn't be distributed around to people who need it and to help pay for essential programs like environmental, education and health care?

i.e. is this just a rich people's thing?

or is this liberals and lower-middle class people coming to them as well?

The fact is imho if you make over 250,000 a year you're rich!

in 4 yrs you're a millionaire.

you'll never be a millionaire if you make what I make at $12.50 an hour
its not because I'm stupid or something like conservatives like to say
I have a college degree. its because I can't find a good paying job in my field right now.

I think the taxes should be distributed evenly, and the rich people should pay a larger share back to the government than those of us who are struggling to survive on a day to day basis for peanuts, and no health benefits.

its just my opinion

Under the Bush plan he gives tax breaks to the wealthiest americans leaving the rest of us behind.

its wrong people! And its time for those of us in the lower income brackets ot stand up and protest this.

Hannity and COlmes are both Frauds as is limbaugh

I think they should rename it the "Sour Grapes Party".

It seems amazing to me how there's a certain group of people who won't even let someone have a chance to change things or better things before they start the picket lines and protests. It took a lot of years to get the country in the mess it's in now. It's not going to be fixed overnight. Almost none of the new policies have even gone into effect, many are still on the drawing boards, and most of the public has little clue about the fine print as it hasn't been written yet, but they're marching anyway. Amazing. Funny, too - while they were marching their kids were at home looking at internet porn and the wives were with Lupe the pool boy. Hoorah.

Btw, Bush and the conservative republicans started this deficit mess by spending trillions on a false war (Iraq) instead of investing in programs we need like health care, environmental reform and education. Not to mention the tax breaks to oil companies , and rich corporations like --*cough* *cough* Halliburtin.

Fox news is a load of conservative lies and evangelical brainwashing.

At least CNN tells the truth

Obama is doing all he can to introduce programs we need in this country and try to repair the damage Bush and the conservative republican party GOP has done the last 8 years.

Give him a chance.

Its time the wealthiest americans started paying their taxes
Maybe they should try working for a living and working for $12 an hour and see what its like.

They didn't complain very loudly at all. They re-elected porkers Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson without fail. We've been deficit spending during peacetime ever since Hannity's patron saint Reagan and when GWB cut taxes while massively expanding spending there was nary a peep. The only reversal came under Clinton/Gingrich and GWB erased that w/ the quickness.

This wasn't a "Fair Tax" rally...it was a Hannity publicity stunt. Feigning outrage at the IRS wasn't worth much 3 years ago despite being in the same fundamental situation we're in now. The seeds were sown for this financial crisis years ago under GWB/Greenspan's watch and Obama's done nothing a rational person w/ a basic understanding economics wouldn't do on the fiscal front(as well as a few Nobel laureates advising). BTW...the deficit as a % of GDP is still much smaller than during WWII when it hit 120% GDP and we bounced back from that just fine. Last time I checked Hannity, Beck, and Limbaugh never managed to pull off so much as a college degree.

Everything about the Fair Tax to me says it's not fully researched and far too unwieldy to police to make it into the mainstream. Outside the millions of tax professionals/IRS employees that would lobby for the status quo, No one can verify true revenue neutrality other than marketing materials. I sat through a 3hr presentation on the Fair Tax by an old GT researcher and there were simply dozens of holes in the plan. From claims that it removes dictating behavior via taxes yet he couldn't answer what's to stop someone like Pelosi from saying no ad valorem tax on Priuses. From the wealthy relocating offshore to massive black markets make me think its nothing more than a pipe dream. Beyond the continual framing it as a 23% (vs. 30%) tax and claims that both price levels would simultaneously drop while incomes magically stay the same, there's just too many questions that Boortz, Linder, and the whole movement just don't sufficiently answer. I may not be a nationally syndicated talk show host but at least I finished one of my degrees in public finance economics.

The first step I would take in any "Fair Tax" situation would be to establish a nice vacation home in Mexico and Canada where I'm also able to work from and buy everything to my heart's desire w/o losing a dime of my income to taxes. Given a need for extra income, I'd likely take a side business importing black market iPods.

An ad valorem tax could be a simpler solution to our current tax issues...unfortunately it's not the Fair Tax. It's simply a regressive tax w/ a brand name. The IRS should just call income tax the "Pursuit of Happiness surcharge". Last time I checked these current "oppressive" tax policies haven't exactly erased the wealthy class and the top 1%'s portion of the total income pie has only gotten bigger from Clinton forward.

I got news for you...get out a calculator and check out how much taxes you REALLY paid, as a % of your income.

We paid ~13% of our income in taxes this year. We made ~170K last year when it was all said and done. This shocked me. How is this fair? I bet you anything someone making the median income (what is it now, ~45K?) probably paid more, %-wise, than we did.

This is why I don't complain about taxes. This is the reality and it's not fair. We SHOULD have to pay a greater % than someone who makes 45K.

* Addition: We own investment property. Investment property is a really wonderful way to lower your taxes come April 15th. But you know what? Someone making 45K most likely doesn't have the ability to own investment property.
