Yes, I did get all over the Atlanta area and have a mixed view of it. I was saddened by all the cookie cutter developments and all the tree loss. I also did not like all the ugly large signs on the Interstate Highways. I was shocked by all the very angry looking Black Men who hung around who looked like they had watched to many Gangster Rap Videos on BET.
I liked the nice drive to Callaway Gardens and the nice homes in Madison GA. I liked the rural and small town side of GA and would not return to Atlanta.

It's unfortunate that you didn’t enjoy your visit to the city, I suspect that with some of your off hand remarks regarding race, you will never enjoy a place we call home. We appreciate your patronage and your open-mindedness, good luck on your next utopian pilgrimage. Please feel free to post your experiences in great detail if you find it.
Thanks,

The first thing I noticed was the lack of traffic even at rush hour. Sure there was some traffic but not so much. The number of people walking up and down the street even during 70 degree weekday lunch hours seemed limited.
I saw few stores and the restaurants seemed empty. I suspect that vital downtowns like Minnapolis, Dever, Portland and Seattle have nothing to worry about.
Downtown was full of skyscrapers but I saw limited commerce and a general lack of energy.
Finally it seemed like Atlanta had a very large number of homeless and mentally ill walking up and down the street. We were constantly approached by all kinds of crazies. The tourist area around Atlanta underground was terrible.
Do you agree with my observations?

Yes, I do. I do think that you need to see more the city though... you were not in a particularly good area for walking, restaurants, etc. But, yes, that is the one thing I think ATL needs to focus on in order to become a world class city -- homelessness and police presence.

I always tell people to avoid staying at a downtown hotel. Much better to stay in Midtown or Buckhead. Midtown is fairly walkable and safe and has many more restaurants and places to go after 5pm. You also have Piedmont Park nearby. Downtown after 5pm is pretty dead. It's an asphalt jungle of mostly just office buildings and hotels. The area around centennial park is better, but I still prefer midtown overall.

And so how does this negate the points made in the post? Why do some people resort to ad hominem attacks when they disagree with something someone says. Downtown Atlanta is basically a deadzone after 5pm.. that's a fact. How many locals in Atlanta go downtown in the evening except for a game at the arena? There is very little pedestrian activity aside from the homeless, of which the majority are mentally ill. downtown Atlanta is not river street in Savannah or Bourbon street in New Orleans or Times Square. I'd love to see Atlanta have a more lively downtown after 5pm, but it doesn't have it yet. Lots of ill conceived urban planning projects are to blame for this.
