Concert Series in Suwanee
I went to Friday night's (May 1, 2009) Concert Series in Suwanee - Town Center. The series is on the 1st Friday of each Month from May to August. IT WAS GREAT!!!!. Great funk, R&B, and JAZZ. Ken Ford kicked @#$$.
The series is put on by MAJIC 107.5 (Steve Harvey's Morning Show is on the station.
ONE THING I HAVE TO NOTE: There were a few thousand people there - VIRTUALLY ALL African American. What happened to the white people? It was in Suwanee. Very Interesting. I saw maybe 10 white's. Funny how the 2006 Brochuere for the series show's the 2006 show - which depicts a sea of whites. Three years later - ALL black. What's with that?

I wonder if it was because of the type of music playing. I was at the Backyard Bash last week and saw mostly whites, followed by asian, then black.

Well, seeing how it's sponsored by an R&B radio station that caters to a predominantly black audience, and featured black artists playing R&B, I can't see why you'd expect a largely white crowd. I'd wager that if the 2006 brochure showed a predominantly white crowd, it was likely a different set of artists.

I just found it interesting that when there's a Jazz concert and about 3,000 to 4,000 people show up - and 99% are black - in Suwanee, which has large white population (part of Suwanee is in Forsyth), finding any whites is looking for a needle in a haystack.

It's still odd given the demographics of folks who buy this type of music...

I think it's more due to the station that's doing the promoting, not the music itself. I'll admit that I don't listen to Majic, but given that they feature Steve Harvey in the mornings, I'd bet that they're catering to a black audience, so that's the audience that's going to attend the concerts they promote. Add in the fact that the white demographic in/around Suwanee and the white demographic that listens to/buys R&B music are likely not one and the same, and there's even more of a reason that white are under-represented at that concert.

Yeah, I believe Majic plays mostly new and old-school R&B... is the Suwanee demographic more of a country music crowd?

I've got no facts to back this up, but I'd bet there's not a large R&B fan base there- just a hunch.

My Suwanee neighborhood is more of a "Steve and Vicki" demographic, I would guess. BTW, I enjoyed sitting on my back deck, having a beer and stogie, and listening to the concert - by some acoustical freak of nature, any music going on in the park sounds like it is playing in my backyard, even though I am a couple of miles away.
