Buying on Craigslist
I am looking at buying a mattress on Craigslist from a dealer that has mattresses in a warehouse but no showroom. They stated they have a no obligation free delivery, where I can reject the goods at my house if I don't like them.
Has anyone bought a mattress from a dealer like this on Craigslist and what was your experience like?
Do you think I should stay away? The prices seem too good to be true...

And you know that old saying of, "if it sounds too good to be true....".
Personally, I wouldn't do it. I mean, the Atlanta area is saturated with mattress stores, outlets, and heck, even Costco and Sam's Club have good prices on them, where you KNOW they're new, unused, etc.
Some of these hole in the wall places carry off-branded sub-par stuff, and even USED mattresses, but sell them like new (complete with bed bugs and all available dried body fluids soaked into them). ugh.
Spend the few extra $$ and buy from a reputable store. The deals out there are numerous.

I agree with atlantagreg. That's not the kind of thing I'd take a chance on (unless I had the CSI blue lights to inspect it). There are many gross things that can hide and not be visible to the naked eye!

There are a lot of companies that buy used mattresses, recover them, then sell them as new. This is NOT legal, but they do it. Some even dumpster dive or take them from people's trash. I used to live in South Florida and this was a BIG problem there. It is disgusting to think what people will do for a dollar. Companies that don't have a storefront usually operate outside of the spotlight for a reason. Just buy a mattress from a reputable dealer.
BTW I've bought and sold tons of things on CL, but a mattress is something I would stick with a good ole brick and mortar store.

Yeah that sounds sketchy. If i were to buy a used mattress, I would be more inclined to purchase it directly from the person.

I agree with atlantagreg, don't do it. Sam's or Costo has the best deals with mattresses. We have bought two sets from Sam's and am very pleased

Also, if you just search this (Atlanta) forum for "mattress" you can find three fairly recent threads on mattress shopping, with comments and recommendations on a variety of mattress vendors in the metro area.

thanks for everyone's input. i spent $150 more than the price on craigslist but ended buying from mattress firm. i did some more research online and saw all the stories about "new" mattresses that are actually used that could have a lot of nasty things on it :S

Craigslist is great for getting a good deal on a car (know what you're doing!), buy a computer, or, um, other "services" LOL. Mattresses are better new.
