I am moving to the Atlanta area and I am having a really hard time deciding where to live. Is Marietta nice? What does it have to offer? I am looking for a family oriented area with nearby shopping, dining and a commutable distance to Dunwoody. Please help!

I'm certain posters that live in and around Marietta will have more specific FYI.

The Cobb County school system is very good, some of the better schools in the state. I don't hear much about the City of Marietta schools and it would have to be a much smaller system.

That said--in the Marietta area, there are many good choices of subdivisions/communities.

I think you might want to look in the East Cobb area which has several outstanding schools and would be more accessible to the Perimeter Mall area.

What's your price range? Why not look in Dunwoody if that's where you'll be working?

sunshine82, you've initiated several threads seeking information on a variety of localities in the north metro area. I think you need to visit, if at all possible, to get some sense of the place, particularly because you seem to be considering some areas quite distant from your husband's workplace in the Perimeter Mall area, and your questions are pretty basic. Honestly, vast portions of the north metro suburbs are "nice", and virtually without exception, they are family-oriented and have shopping and dining galore. Also, a designation such as "Marietta" covers a big geographic area housing hundreds of thousands of people and neighborhoods ranging from sketchy areas you probably would want to avoid, to enclaves of million-dollar mansions.

Metro Atlanta has about 5 million people and it's very sprawling. It's huge, and furthermore the traffic is terrible. It's vital to focus on finding a place to live within a reasonable commuting distance of the breadwinner's workplace.

Marietta High School seems to have a very good reputation, and judging from the recent table in the AJC showing the percentage of high school students requiring remedial classes in college, the Marietta school district is doing a very good job. Here are the top schools on that list:

1. Fayette….McIntosh…………….4….NA ……..NA
2. Cobb ……Lassiter…………….4 ….3……….6
3. Cobb ……George Walton….…………..Comprehensive……..5….NA ……..NA
4. Marietta ..Marietta…………….5 ….7 ……..31
5. Cobb ……Wheeler …………….6 ….7 ……..13
6. DeKalb ….Chamblee…………….6 ….2 ……..10
7. Cobb ……Alan C. Pope…………7 ….2……….8

The actual city of Marietta has its own city school system that is separate from the rest of Cobb County Schools. Also, Cobb county and Marietta are very broad and spread out and there are many different neighborhoods and schools throughout. It's important to visit and drive through to get a good feel of the differences.

Racist police? Ridiculous. There are some nasty ghettos near the town square there. I'm sure the cops see all kinds behavior.

Mshare is right. Marietta has its own schools and they're generally less preferred over the nearby Cobb County schools (not to say that all Cobb schools are great).

Please cite a source to support this assertion. The police in Cobb don't put up with crime or criminals, no matter what race. So is your definition of racism is the fact that cops arrest criminals who happen to be minorities?
