Relocating from Miami to Atlanta, where to live?
I have just taken a job with a company that requires me to move to Atlanta. I will be covering the Southeast US, so access to the airport is important. I am married (both in our early 30's) and have two children under four years old, we are looking for a nice suburb in or around the Atlanta area. Housing in the $350k to $450k would be ideal. I will be contacting a real estate agent shortly, but any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I would like to research some areas online before I talk to an agent, but I don't know where to begin. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Well, if you want to have easy access to the airport, you'll want to be on the south side of town. Places to consider that have decent schools would be Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Peachtree City, which are all roughly 20-25 miles south of the airport. While there are closer areas (like Fairburn and unincorporated areas of South Fulton County), the schools there aren't so hot yet. There is a lot of development coming up along South Fulton Parkway, and you can score alot more house for your money there than you can in the other places I noted, but you're rolling the dice that the schools will improve by the time you need them for your kids.

Another option is choose Dunwoody/Sandy Spring or West Roswell area. You then can take 45 minutes train to MARTA. Roswell high is rated pretty high and there are a lot of excellent private schools around that area if you choose Dunwoody.

What kind of housing are your looking for? HOw new/old? How many bedrooms, etc? Willing to renovate or rather not? All these questions plus the area of Metro Atlanta determine how far your money will go. For example, you can't get brand new in Dunwoody for under $800,000 and that is for no yard.
Decent private schools for two children will exceed $20,000 a year, $15,000 if you settle for less.
I think I would pick south of the airport, because it is a better value and offers better access to the airport.
