I would start by checking with whoever you have auto insurance with.

I use Geico and I think they have competitive rates for auto and renters'/homeowners' insurance.

Most companies should provide a decent rate, generally $15-25 a month for renters insurance. As mentioned check with your auto insurer.

GEICO doesn't have Renter's directly but they deal through Traveler's and they still provide some discount. The policy on my rented condo is $178/yr for 30k in coverage. It was a bit cheaper when I was renting a room in a house b/c there were a lot fewer units. When I had a standard apt I think it was $125/yr for ~15k in coverage.

Regardless of who you go with, DO get it. Far too many people do not carry it, and every-other day you hear about apartment fires anymore. An average of $20 a month is well worth the peace of mind that if someone else's kid decides to play with matches in the apartment next to yours, you will at least be able to replace your stuff.
Note, if you have a security alarm system, you usually get a discount on renter's insurance, too. Make sure to ask the agent about it.

Thanks for everyones advice. I went with Progressive (my car insurance provider) and got renter's insurance for $206 for the entire year...Not too bad for that type of coverage.

Renters insurance is less than $25 a month and folks don't have it? Are you serious?
Its cheaper than Metro PCS or a cable bill....
Whoa...

I can't remember the exact stats, but I do remember when an apartment building went up in flames once near Norcross, the reporter said that in the Atlanta area at that time, it was estimated that 90% of apartment renters do not have renter's insurance. Yep. Fer real. Scary.
