I think your range is still doable in the Emory area, particularly in the Toco Hills and Executive Park neighborhoods in North Druid Hills. What I've observed is that because of new (and more upscale) apartment construction in the area, the slightly older (but still very nice) complexes have resorted to aggressive discounting...so you can get a really good deal around there right now.
Example: a friend of mine was living in a brand new complex in Executive Park; his rent was 1400.00, and he had all the bells and whistles. He is planning to retire to Ft Lauderdale in 3 years, so he has begun counting his scheckels. His lease came up, and the complex right next door offered him the same setup for 700.00 mo. He doesn't have the granite countertops or the state of the art bathroom fixtures, but figures that's a small price to pay.
Here's the complex that he moved to...it's about 7-8 min to the Emory campus.
