If it was me, I'd be scared that he's not charging enough and may end up leaving 1/2-way through the job when he figures out he's losing money. Your description is a little fuzzy, but it sounds like you're getting around 572 sf of patio cover/deck, which by itself should be far more than $8k, plus a slider that should run a grand by itself. He's tiling the whole thing too? The tilework alone for 572sf should be a few grand........

Well, I'm buying all the materials myself and the contractor is stalling for me. I've seen some of his work around my neighbors home......

You didn't say that in the original post.

What about those lights? Is your 'contractor' also a licensed electrician? Is he also licensed by the state to be a contractor? The state started requiring GC's to be licensed last year.

Ohh, so you're hiring an unlicensed, uninsured jackleg to provide labor only- now the price makes sense. Hopefully he doesn't fall off the roof and sue you for his medical expenses, or mis-wire the lights and burn the house down. You're getting a building permit, right?

I'll rephrase for the kiddies. . . .
If you want an honest answer, it is important that you first provide all the important details; like the fact that you are providing materials. Because that would be considered an important detail.
