Default Where to relocate to?

I may be relocating to the Atlanta area from Texas and I have been reading lots of the messages on here. I'm still wondering, though, which area will be right for my family and I.
We are looking at the areas to the north and northwest of Atlanta, and want to live in a nice, low crime area with good schools. I see a lot of messages saying, " you can get a nice house for $400k. Problem is, that's a little out of our price range. We're looking at something closer to $200 or $250, since my wife stays home with our 11 month son.
I've looked at some houses online in Roswell and Marietta, but its hard to tell how the area is by just looking at a house on realtor.com.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

You can find some ranch houses in Lassister school (East Cobb) for 250K. Also, Suwanee, South Forsyth, Dacula have some houses under 250K and they have all ok schools.

South Forsyth between GA400 exits 12 and 15 should net you some results, as stated by jxu66. Alpharetta/John's Creek may have a few houses in that range as well. Alpharetta schools are rated highly. (GA400 exits 8-11). I live on the east side of 400 off exit 9. I think the houses in our area are going for 250-300 but you see an occasional come up for 200-250.

Try the Canton/Holly Springs area- great schools, far enough out of downtown yet not out in the sticks, and affordable homes. We're buying in the Harmony on the Lakes subdivision, and there's homes there in your price range.

West Cobb has some nice schools and you would be able to find more homes in your price range. Look at Harrison HS and Kennesaw Mountain HS areas. The only thing is that it could be a pretty long commute to work depending on where you end up working. It might be helpful to mention what part of town you will be working so we can make better suggestions to you.

I just found out that if I do relocate to Atlanta, I would be working at one of the Federal Buildings downtown, near MLK and Forsythe. What kind of driving time am I looking at if I go in at around 7:00 am?
Thanks for the suggestions.

If you work in downtown, forget Canton/Woodstock, Suwanee and South Forsyth. That's one hour half driving in the morning.

Maybe you can try to find something south of city like Peachtree city.

Thanks JXU66,
Would I be looking at that kind of drive time from Marietta or Acworth also?

I work near there. I live in Tucker, 12 miles NE of downtown. I usually leave my house at 7:20 and get to work at 7:55. I haven't been late in months, and sometimes I leave as late as 7:25. This morning I left home at 7:10 because I needed to get a haircut before work. I was able to get downtown, get a haircut and STILL made it to my desk at 7:58.

Some people don't consider Tucker because they want a brand new oversized house. Tucker is mostly brick homes built in the '60s.

I would write the Acworth area off of your list. We live near Acworth and it's a long commute to downtown...I would say 1.5 hours is a good estimate. Marietta covers a lot of ground, so I guess it would depend on what part of Marietta you would be looking.
