we live between dawsonville and dahlonega on hwy 9, i work in the johns creek area . it takes me 40 mins to get there. i also have commuted back to fla several times a month. i can get to dunwoody from my house in an hour. i have only been held up in traffic once in the 7 months i have been here. but you also have to understand . we floridians do not mess around when we need to get somewhere. in other words we do not lolly gag around , i am focused on getting where i need to be . i can zip outa the hills on 136 at 55 to 60 mph which is the speed limit on this road . you can do 70 to 75 on ga 400 all the way up , in fact the slowest i have had to go with the flow is 60, 65.

now i would not want to do this from elijay every day , but its doable from the dawsonville / dahlonega area

I don't blame you for wanting the mountains! I do too! I have a house in the mountains between Jasper and Ellijay, and I work in Sandy Springs. During the week I live in a rented house in south Forsyth County right off of 400. Any easy commute to my office. However, on weekends, I live in the mountains. Monday mornings I drive in from the East Ellijay area to my office in Sandy Springs which is right off of 400 before the toll gate. It always takes me at least 2 hours, and it's 70 miles door-to-door. I'm looking for a job up there . . . I can't take that commute!

Default throwing my two cents in...

My dad has commuted from Ellijay to inside the perimeter for 25 years now! OK, he doesn't drive it everyday NOW, but he used to when I was growing up. Someone else in his office lived in Morganton, between Ellijay and Blue Ridge!! I think it comes down to the person doing the driving, and maybe what kind of car they have! I think the commute gets easier when you drive an Audi, just a guess...

Dahlonega or Ellijay have everything we're looking for and both are long drives. I guess I'm asking how bad it could possibly be? Will the hour drive turn into a two hour drive everyday?

I drove from Dawsonville to exit 5 every day for 2 years. It was about 47 miles one way. I averaged about 1:20 - 1:30. At least once a month - if not more, it was 2 hours. I would leave about 7:00 and get to work between 8:20 and 8:40. I could, at like 3 in the morning, make it in an hour. In the evening I could leave about 6:00 and usually be home about 7:15ish.

I'd say you're looking at about 1:45 at rush hour minimum. And you will hit 2 hours more than a little bit. Off-peak, which is a VERY small window on 400, you can cut that possibly to under 1:30.

I think we decided on Dahlonega. He drove it quite a few times while he was up there training and he was fine with it. He wans to get out of here so bad he just doesn't care about the drive.

I do believe we will rent for a while so we can take a look around a little more. If he's willing to drive an hour and a half there are many possibilities.

Ok, let me update......
We have been in Dahlonega for over a year now. My husband drives the 65 miles to work 5 days a week. It takes him approximately an hour and 15 minutes one way. He is off peak, so there is never much traffic. He says he doesn't mind at all because it is well worth living here in the mountains and out of that rat race.
Me, I absolutely love it here. Right now it's fall and the colors take my breath away. Being from Jacksonville, Fl. I am not used to this. In fact, I don't know if I will ever get used to this.......beautiful.

That's awesome. Good for you guys. Can't beat N GA. We stayed in a B&B over the gold rush festival in Dahlonega and loved it....just a great time of year to be up there.
