Default Driving from Dahlonega to Dunwoody

My husband works a 12 hour shift here and says he would not mind the long drive from Dahlonega to Atlanta because his new job would only be 8 hours. Is he kidding himself? I know it's over an hour drive, but if we want to live in or near the mountains.......

Dahlonega or Ellijay have everything we're looking for and both are long drives. I guess I'm asking how bad it could possibly be? Will the hour drive turn into a two hour drive everyday?

Wow, let's just say it would take him at least an hour and 45 mins if not closer to 2 hrs from Dahlonega to Atlanta. It takes a good 45 mins or longer to get from Dahlonega to Alpharetta, so your looking at another good hour or more into the city from Alpharetta. Tell him good luck and you might see him by the time the prime time shows come on at night......gesshhh, does he want to commit himself to the psycho ward, because he would be doing just that after that drive for a few months......

WHO has been telling you that the drive from Ellijay or Dahlonega takes only an hour? Especially Ellijay.

Please pull up a map online and find Alpharetta or Cumming -- even Canton, Acworth or Gainesville. All far closer, right?

Now pull up some threads via City-Data search on the topic of daily commuting from those much closer towns. An eye-opener.

He is in Atlanta (Smyrna) right now and drove to Ellijay two days ago in a little over an hour.

I'm impressed.

But didn't you say he would be working in Dunwoody?

If you really want to know the truth about the commute your husband is considering, you would be wise to also get advice from people who do the Smyrna-to-Dunwoody portion of that commute daily. Then add that much time to your estimate, at least.

It's not really Dunwoody, but it's north of atlanta. I just chose that because it looks close to where it is. He says it's in between Smyrna and 285, so......

Does it truly take that long to drive even though it's only 63 miles? I really don't want to live that close to Atlanta.

I think it depends a lot on what time of the day he's driving. If it's during rush hour that 63 miles could easily take 2 hours. If it's during non peak periods he could get lucky and do it in an hour or so.

Miper,

I have a friend who moved from Jacksonville to Blairsville 18 years ago. He commuted to Atlanta for 18 years!!!! His thought was, he might have to work in the rat race, but he doesn't have to live in it!

His wife thought he was nuts, so they rented for two years until he "proved" to her that he really could stand the drive.

If your husband is that determined, and if his hours are "off peak" he really might be able to handle it. What are the chances that he might eventually be able to find a job closer to where you want to live.

I know that you really really want to live in the mountains.

I live in Blairsville and it takes me an hour to get to Ellijay and 2 and a half hours to get to the Atlanta airport. During off peak hours, I can get to the airport in 2 hours.

I will be glad to put you in contact with some real people who are currently making the drive.
