I think at this point I would do everything in my power to avoid walking anywhere in Home Park or in the general areas just outside of Tech campus...catch a shuttle, get a campus security escort, get 3 or 4 friends to walk with me, etc. This situation has received a lot of publicity with everyone, including would-be criminals looking for new opportunities. People, students included, need to make some adjustments for a little while and let the media attention die down.

^The on-campus after hours shuttle service restricts itself to bringing students only to areas ON campus. *sigh* I don't see what the big deal is to have a radius of service (like 2 miles or something) around campus and actually help students get home safely in Home Park or M Street Apartments or Centennial Place Apts.

I live near GT and Home Park. In fact, I'm pursuing a degree there. I have not, thankfully, been a victim of a crime in my 3+ years here, and hope to keep it that way. My advice:
Do not go out at night (by car or by foot) for ANY reason.
Do not go to nightclubs/bars in the vicinity and return home at 3AM.
Do your work in your dorm room or apartment at night, not in the library or laboratory.
Do not live in Home Park without a security system.
These men who are venturing out at 1 AM have that "Nothing will happen to me" syndrome. The have yet to learn the lesson, "Yes it will".
40 year olds do not walk around intown at 1 AM. These students need to stop being easy targets. If a student needs to pull an all-nighter, he should sleep in the library or lab, or better yet, improve his time management skills and sleep safely in his room at night.
I can't tell you how often I've gotten agitated at friends who insist on going to a club and walking home (to Home Park) at 2AM. Or those who have a sudden pang of conscience and decide to humor a panhandler for 3 minutes.

You're aware that not all college students are single, childless people with no job, right? Lots of people have a combination of jobs, classes and other obligations that require them to come home late at night. There is such a thing as night classes as well, so that whole "Don't go out at night, at all ever" might work in your little world, but it's just not reality for many people.
Also, some fields of study - architecture, for example - require students to do their work in labs, studios or workshops with equipment or computer programs that they don't have at home. "Just do your work at home" is not an option for them.
Besides, what good is it for all the normal people to cower at home from 9 pm to 6 am, just letting the criminals have the streets?
I'm pretty sure you're aware of how renter-heavy Home Park is. If you tell your landlord you're moving out if he/she doesn't install an alarm, you're likely to get a hearty laugh right in your face because someone else will move in two days after you leave. Lots of people don't have cars and/or need to live with roommates. They don't have the luxury of just going somewhere else.

Ah, yes. If all else fails, blame the victims.

Yes Darkone you are correct, once you are over 40 about the only walking around you do at 1am is getting up and walking to the bathroom to pee

Look here, I know all about having access to certain engineering software available on machines only on campus. What I am saying is that I do this work during the day and then go home before darkness falls. I don't procrastinate and don't waste my time socializing and texting away a quarter of the day. Reading books, writing papers etc. can be done at home.
I agree that married students and those w/ children have it harder, but they're the ones who wanted it that way.
You are correct that there are night classes, but I would never go to Tech (or GSU) for that purpose, given its location.
If people want to share the streets w/ criminals at 1AM, you are more than welcome. 1AM is a time to be in bed - and yes, I am a twenty-something.

People should be able to walk anywhere they want at any time without fear of being attacked. It may require some vigillante justice to put an end to this thuggery. I wish some folks with concealed weapons would start walking the area at around midnight and put a bullet in one of these guys.

People all over the world should be able to do things, which they can't due to circumstances. I don't think that having shootouts between ordinary citizens and criminals will solve anything.
