Have you been here before? Or did you just join the forum to bash Atlanta with 2 posts that have nothing to do with the subject thread?

So you've based your whole impression on Atlanta just from passing thru, ok then.

Atlanta is a gorgeous city however to out of towners the large "thug" and homeless population here tends to leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. I have tried to be defensive of this in the past but have realized it is pretty bad here and when people make comments I just have to agree. Its sad to say.

I love visiting Atlanta....and I visit places mostly as a tourist, not usually on business. I grew up near Chicago and also lived close to St.Louis. Obviously, those were places I went to often living close to them. However, when I lived in Illinois we made a few trips to Atlanta with Atlanta being the destination--not a stop along the way.
I've lived near Philadelphia and now live in Orlando. I still get in the car and head to Atlanta as my destination. When I am on vacation I am not always interested in spending tons of money at theme parks and other such places. I go on vacation to visit an area--and Atlanta is a beautiful area!!!
I loved it in my 20's and almost 30 years later, I still love it. A few weeks ago I was in Philadelphia and driving home I was going to detour thru Atlanta for a few days--that was the day your rain started. Since the forcast called for rain for the next several days, I skipped it and just headed back to Orlando. Atlanta is not exactly what you would call on the most direct route from Philadelphia to Orlando, but hey, I love your city and wanted to spend some time there again.
Atlanta has one of the most beautiful nighttime skylines I have ever seen. I love going thru the downtown area at night. This past December I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I visited your city and found the downtown area trees full of white twinkle lights and the leaves on the trees turning color. It was fall (my favorite time of year in the north) and Christmas (favorite holiday) all at once. I was smitten!!!!
Your topography is wonderful--hills with the mountains right out your back door. Flatland Illinois and Florida don't even come close to that beautiful sight.
Atlanta has some wonderful shopping, cute towns, and nice people. I may have been foolish, but this past December I walked alone in the downtown area near the underground for several blocks. I never felt threatened and I am a white female close to the age of having a mid-life crisis :-)
I have been searching for a place to call home now that my kids are finally out the door. Been in Orlando for 8 years now--and I don't like it any better now than I did 8 years ago. It's probably not going to grow on me and I can finally move on without uprooting my kids again. I've enjoyed visiting Atlanta so much that it is on my very short list of places to move to.
Anyway, my point is-don't underrate this beautiful city as a tourist destination because it doesn't have a Disney, a beach, tons of museums, etc. It is full of things to do and places to see for anyone who is interested in finding such.

What a lovely post! This is exactly how I feel about Atlanta. I live in the metro area suburbs and I often find myself taking the long way home just to drive through the city and our urban neighborhoods. To go from the midtown and downtown skyscrapers to Inman Park quaintness to Little 5 Points funkiness is a treasure. The craftsman homes and Victorians in these areas are just gorgeous, added to the full supply of beautiful tree cover and nice warm weather, you can't help but drive slow and take it all in!
Just yesterday, I did a little self tour driving through our hoods before I went home. I fall back in love with the place every time :-).
Some good words from someone who's actually spent time here. Reps for you!

It really is not that simple. People usually live somewhere because they have roots there, or they go to school or found employment there. Atlanta will keep growing and retaining people because its economy will keep expanding, becoming more diverse and because the cost of living will be reasonable for a metro area of its size. This doesn't mean that Atlanta is some exotic and/or intriguing place to visit for outsiders. I don't think it ever will be. There are too many other large cities in the country and world worth spending a plane ticket and accommodations on than Atlanta. I think that all of the new developments in Atlanta are aimed at creating more of a world-class feel for residents, but certainly not for attracting outsiders. A person in Connecticut would rather visit the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, not the Atlantic Station version.
