Jews in Atlanta?
Hello again! I'm looking forward to my July trip to check out the job situation and the area.
If I decide to accept the offer, I'll be relocating!
I was wondering, are there many Jews in the area? I'm not active (Reform) but in case something dreadful should happen or I feel like acknowledging the High Holy Days, I'd like to know I'm not alone.
I've read online about Breman Jewish Heritage Museum
and the new Macus JCC. (I think it's in Dunwoody?)
Can anyone point me in the right direction? THANKS!

I've noticed more Jews in the Alpharetta area. There is also a Jewish community in Atlanta too.

There are many young Jewish professionals in the core of Atlanta.
Check out Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta
Somewhere between 60K and 100K Jews call Atlanta home.

It feels like rather few compared to other large cities I've lived.
Jews are scattered all over of course but the largest population is primarily ITP in the druid hills area. I think Dunwoody and Roswell/East Cobb are some other areas you will find the largest concentration of jews. The JCC is in the Dunwoody area. It's fairly new (last 10 years I think) and quite large. There are also few Jewish synogogues. The northernmost one that I am aware of is in Roswell.
I don't want to say 'There's no jews here'... Like I said Jews are scattered everywhere. But for instance there's a handful of Jewish people here in buford. Since there are no synogogues nearby, they were at one time trying to hold services at someone's house and invite others over. It was all organized through an e-mail list.

There are enough Jews here that you wouldn't feel like isolated, but they are very integrated -- even when I was a kid, it didn't seem to be as big a deal as other places I have lived.
There's an active synagogue near the corner of Northside Drive and Peachtree Battle, in the heart of Buckhead/Haynes Mill resedential district. And there's a very large handsome edifice with a dome called "The Temple" at Pershing Point (on Peachtree at the very south end of Buckhead). I don't know if that is different from a synagogue or not, LOL, but I think they have fairly high-end cantors come in for holiday services.
Anyway, what I wanted to add: There was a traditional Jewish area in the vicinity of Lenox Road as it runs east into Morningside. Not like "all Jewish" but a much higher percentage than the city average, and there were several kosher delis and stuff like that. I'm not sure about today, since Katz's and Happy Herman's have closed. Much to my dismay.

The most visible part of the Jewish community is the large Orthodox presence in Toco Hills, just north of Druid Hills. When you see dozens of people walking to/from shul on shabbat, it makes an impression. But as with the Jewish community in America in general, Orthodoxy is only a portion (far from a majority) of the Jewish world. These days, the majority of the Jews in the metro area live outside the Perimeter, though perhaps only just (that's why the JCC moved from Midtown to Dunwoody) -- East Cobb, Sandy Springs, and Dunwoody, and to some extent Roswell, have the largest numbers, as you say.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta lists 42 synagogues on its web site. That's more than a "few", by most standards. Congregations Gesher L'Torah, Congregation Dor Tamid, the Chabad of North Fulton, and the North Metro Campus of the JFGA are all located north of Roswell.

I visited that link and clicked on a bunch of the names to get their locations and it confirms what I said.
roswell, druid hills- la vista rd, dunwoody-tilly mill rd, east cobb, more atlanta, more roswell.
Like I said, there are some jews scattered everwhere but few and far between outside of these particular pockets.
Heck, I know a jew living out in Rockmart! By choice!
You're not going to find a synogogue in lawrenceville, forsyth county, hall county, cherrokee county, the southside- fuhgedda bout it.
In the good old days, the place to be was off of buford highway in the skyland area. This is no longer the case.

Oh and we only have one bagel place in the entire city. (Goldbergs) If you want a lox & bagel in this town, you'll want to be near one of their two locations. Another point for dunwoody.
