I lived in Cobb County and there were areas there I would not touch too. Gwinnett IMO gets a bad rap. Our former neighbors in Cobb are moving to Gwinnett because of job (he is being shuttled to an office in Gwinnett). They are going to Brookwood because of the rep of the school and no apartments feeding into it.

Neil, Both my parents immigrated to this country as did my husband. I don't mind that people speak their language so that it doesn't die. Often times what happens is that the parents have learned the langauge before they came here and or have their kids learn it. It is a miconception that they don't know the langauge it just upsets people when other speak there language because they don't understand it. I don't mind the different foods people bring either.
The fabric of america has unraveled and keeps developing. No one has to change that is ridiculous I like that Jews have their own traditions, as do Irish, and Africans, etc. That is America. What needs to change is the racial divisions that have bloodied on the fabric of this country. Again, this country is most interesting because of its differences.

I'm not saying abandon culture and traditions. I'm saying learn the traditions and culture of America and make the effort to be part of that melting pot.
Case in point....election ballots in foreign languages to me are ridiculous. To vote, you must be a US citizen. To become a US citizen, you must have been a resident for at least 3 years if married to an American or 5 years if not. You must also pass a basic English proficiency test before getting citizenship. Given all that, why are we spending millions of taxpayer dollars to print ballots in foreign languages? Can we not figure out that President is the same thing as Presidente after at least 3 years in the US? If an immigrant chooses to come to any country, they must learn the language and culture. Ever been to France?

All traditional "less government" southerners who wish to pay more taxes to educate immigrants in the english language please raise their hands!

You make the mistake that all liberals make...you assume solutions must come from the government. If you make the choice to immigrate to a country, then you should be able to support yourself and the burden is on you to learn the language and pay your way.

Wow. What I find most amusing about this thread is that hardly anyone seems to actually live in Gwinnett. I've only been here two years, so I don't claim to be an expert on what it is/was/will be. However, I work, live, play, and pay taxes here. How many other people do?

Good point. I would also add that if those immigrants, in supporting themselves "choose" to not learn english because they don't see it as a necessary mechanism for survival, then who are we to judge?
Especially since the American market system with its dual language ATM's and dual language call center choices seem so willing to accomodate them in that "choice".

That's fine, as long as they don't ask taxpayers for assistance with bilingual education and other accomodations due to their lack of english, and they don't ask taxpayers for assistance when no one will hire them because they have no english language skills.

When there comes a point that the wealthy and well-heeled refuse to hire them for cheap labor and instead hire Americans for higher living wages, you will have my support.

My sentiments exactly. I don't see anything arrogant about that.
