Anybody know about Austell and Cobb County?
I know Cobb County has a good reputaion overall. I hear it is rough around 6 flags.
but
How is Austell?
How is South Cobb High School?
How does the City and School compare to Stone Mountain and the DeKalb Schools there if I had to choose between the 2 ?

I know Cobb county around Kennesaw and Marietta has good schools. But my neighbor just moved from Austell and she said it was because the schools were so horrible. I don't know which schools she was zoned for but she didn't like the area at all.

A friend of mine that lives in Austell called the area "Cobb County's dirty little secret." She said she was under the impression that ALL of Cobb was good, but discovered that pretty much most of South Cobb has not lived up to her expectations.

Opinions are generally going to vary, with some saying that South Cobb is "just fine" while others would refuse to live there.
Generically speaking, the areas just North of Powder Springs (West Cobb), Parts of Marietta, East Cobb, and the Kennesaw areas are considered the "good" areas. South of Powder Springs, Austell, and Mableton are what people debate about.

I think the central and southern parts of Smyrna could also be considered "good" areas by most measures. Smyrna north of Windy Hill perhaps not so much. I'm not sure I'd live in East Cobb for various reasons, but some parts of Smyrna would fit me like a glove.
"Mableton" actually encompasses a rather varied area which is directly south of Smyrna. Some of the areas which are directly adjacent to Smyrna are newer residential areas, some areas are older residential, and some areas are industrial, but the different regions within Mableton are fairly well defined in other threads.

Check out the CCPD PENS (Police Email Notification System) website which has each precinct's stats and crime info. Compare Precinct 2 which includes Austell with some of the other precincts.

You can see a more specific breakdown of recent Precinct 2 crime information here ... that will give you a better idea of the areas where crime actually takes place:

I didn't make any judgements, and the PENS data is split by beat number within each precinct, so if you look at the beat map within the specific precinct, you get a very localized and specific set of information on the recent crime activity.

I'm just saying that raw precinct data is not sufficient for a realistic comparison (the area covered by a single precinct is still too large to be meaningful).

I would disagree, but I guess in the end it's subjective. If I compare the precinct and beat that covers where my home is located, and I compare the number of individual crime categories like "residential burglaries" or "home invasions," I think a meaningful comparison can be made based on the magnitude of crime in each area.
Now there are some who could make the case that population densities and per capita stats are needed, but I still think you can look at Beat 215 for instance and compare that with other beats and understand the difference in areas.
