Smile Moving to ATL from NYC...Help

I've been reading lots of posts on this matter and I know that those of you who are already living in Atlanta will say: don't move here without a job lined up.

Thing is, I don't have a job lined up in NYC either as August 1st.
So why stay? My wife and I hate NYC. It's a great city but people are just so in your space and rude that we're constantly on edge. It's very crowded here. There's no privacy. Thank god we have relatives in New Paltz(upstate). It's nice to get away.

I work in the restaurant industry and I was thinking about knocking on every door once in ATL. As for my wife, she's a licensed teacher with a master's. No jobs in that field right now but she could always sub until that hopefully changes. We're looking to live in a house. F*** that apartment lifestyle. I'm a drummer and would love a practice room plus we will have a child next year.

The big thing for us is quality of life and cost of living (NYC is ridiculous).
Winter blows in NY, it feels as if it never ends.

I am new to city data and I'm looking forward to having people respond to my fears.

I doubt you and your wife will have any problems finding jobs here. This year alone I have had so many buyers moving from New York to Atlanta.

Teaching jobs are plentify here in Atlanta. And if you research the trends, restaurants have not experienced as a significant of a downturn and other industries. Atlanta is known for lifestyle and entertainment. Now to make the life decision to move, only you can gauge whats best for you. I will say, I have experienced lots of buyers migrating here as well. With the pricing of houses in the south, and the fact that there is a lot of houses available. You will definetly get your pick of the litter. Loans will be an issue due to lack of employment but there are lots of options out there with consideration to down payment and credit score.

Boonieboy, your post seems to be attracting realtors more eager for your business than to give you the straight facts. Teaching jobs are very hard to come by in metro Atlanta right now -- except perhaps for those with certain hard-to-find specializations. Restaurants are feeling the pinch of the recession here as elsewhere.

Moving to Atlanta may be a fine choice for you and your wife. But the advice commonly given on this forum is good - don't move without securing a job here first.

Moving from NYC to Atlanta can only be one's experience. You have to try it out for yourself to realize if the Atl is really for you and your family. The whole state of Georgia has a lot to offer as far a peaceful family life, but what else is there to do? Ask yourself that question and analyze your future. Life situations may be similar, but worlds apart. Think about what you like to do after work, on the weekends or just simply just taking a strole. Is Georgia really for you? Ask yourself, where will you retire, where do you see growth in your financial and professional future? Think about it.

Great recommendation- if you're looking to prove RRD's point. TeachGeorgia has a total of 24, yes, as in 2 dozen, positions posted in the metro Atlanta school districts. I'm sure the OP's wife can just waltz in and have her pick of those 24 spots, right?

Teaching jobs are NOT plentiful here right now. A number of teachers in most, if not all metro districts were either let go or surplussed. Couple that with the fact that we have the usual Spring/Summer education graduates looking for a job--times are hard.

Substitute teaching really won't get your foot in the door either anymore--in my nine years of teaching I have never seen so many different substitute teachers like I did last year. Apparently subbing has become the "back up plan" for quite a few people.

Oh, and another thing: Add to the fact that the state governor just decided a few days ago that he's withholding 3 days worth of teacher pay from each school district in the state...so districts will either furlough teachers or get rid of more positions. Teaching is NOT the safe haven it once was at this point in time.

Good luck.

OH, and I'd like to think of myself as a reliable source--I teach.
