Angry More Homeless people in Atlanta!?!

I was reading this article this morning on wsbtv.com about New York City exporting their homeless out of town:
New York Sending Homeless To Georgia - News Story - WSB Atlanta

and to be quite honest I was beside myself with frustration. If it isn't the "I am moving to Atlanta should I get a job" type threads that I read on here, if it isn't the problems brought by Hurricane Katrina, and if it ain't the 10.1% unemployment rate in Georgia, now we got New York City shipping their social problems to Atlanta.

As it is, Georgia does not have a great social mechanism for dealing with the down-and-out people already here, so now there are potentially more for our fair state to deal with. What do you guys and gals think? Can anything be done about this?

Well, we have Hartsfield airport with lots of planes gassed up and ready to go. Maybe we need to do a few "return to sender" packages to NYC.

That heading was a bit deceptive. THe article said they must have a family member agreeing to take them in before they get the plane ticket. So hopefully they are not homeless anymore, AND they wont just be hanging around with the other homeless in Atlanta.

Haha, love it! Good one Greg!

I cant believe the state of Georgia would agree for this to happen, what a mess. The thought of adding more random homeless people from one city to another just to basically "kick them out" of their city sounds ridiculous! Dam yankees lol. Guess we can also count on the crime rate skyrocketing even higher than its been. There's the blue jeans bandits, tape guy bandits, bikini bandit and now there will be the cardboard box bandits!

The article neglected to mention the other important piece of the puzzle- the homeless can't just walk in and say "I want to go to Atlanta"- they have to have originated here, and have family here willing to accept and house them. This isn't a "I want to be homeless in a warmer climate" program, as the article makes it sound.

I didn't notice they have to be native to Atlanta, but I did see where they have to be taken in through family here, which really, all they would have to do is say "yes we will take them in our home", then they just run rampant through the city causing more problems the city already has to deal with.

I do wonder though - just because family members agree to "receive" them, it doesn't necessarily mean that once the people get off the plane, they actually show up at the relatives homes to live there or that the relatives follow through with allowing them to move in. My guess is that there is no followup once they get on the plane. Many of them might just get off the plane and head straight to the streets, or wind up on the streets shortly after arriving and deciding not to stay with the families once here. Lots of gaps in the details.

Also, how long will the arrangement work out if they are living with relatives? If they could all get along, wouldn't they already be in that situation? I bet many of these "helpful relatives" will run out of patience for drugs, booze, etc and kick them out after awile.
