These neighborhoods aren't that far apart but it can take 30 minutes during rush hour to get from one to the other.

Yep, and crime can vary a lot in just a mile or two as well.

Even out where I live in the burbs, my neighborhood is "ok" when it comes to the overall crime rate. Go a few blocks in a certain direction and it climbs noticeably.

Buckhead is great, but it's hardly walkable in quite a few places. I would suggest Virginia Highlands where there are a lot of young, single women. Also, you'll be in the heart of the city where young people hang out. On the contrary to an earlier post, there is really not much crime in the Highlands. In fact, I would venture to say that the Highlands are safer than Buckhead.

Crime in the Highlands is not bad at all. It's very walkable and is very close to Piedmont Park, as well as quick driving access to Emory, Little 5, Midtown, Decatur, Downtown, etc.

Buckhead is tough to get around. It has the feel of a huge shopping mall by day and a frat party by night.

I'd say the only thing about Buckhead that's better than Virginia-Highlands is that Buckhead has Marta stations and Va-Hi does not.

Downtown is a ghost town now, but GA State University is building LOTS of dorms and is remaking the entire area into a much more youthful place. Lots of condos are being built everywhere you look. Downtown will be very different three years from now.

I guess we should have been more specific about what PART of Buckhead might be better than the other. LOL. True, the "Buckhead Triangle" area is very dicey at night. At one time it was the Frat Party, then it turned into Hip Hop central, and I think now it's slowly turning into "drunken New Orleans" each weekend. True - in the Triangle area on weekends especially it's not a fun place to live (Rap music coming from cars at 3am rattling nearby residents windows, etc.). Further up in the Lenox Square area it's a bit better in terms of quality of residential living.

Va. Hi. if I could afford it would as mentioned earlier, be a pick for me. While it doesn't have a MARTA station it's not that far from one, and the village atmosphere and park nearby make up for it. If the city ever actually does go through with their transit projects, there may eventually be street cars in the Va. Hi. area again - but that part I wouldn't hold my breath over.

Wow, okay I have no idea what part of buckhead it is in but I'll ask the owner. I'm laughing about the drunken New Orleans comment but it's also making me a little skiddish regarding this condo. It is in zip 30305 and on East Paces Ferry. Right now, it seems like a nice place to live and the owner said that it is pedestrian friendly but I won't know for sure until I see for myself.

I'm still looking into Virginia Highlands right now to see what I come up with. Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

Westchester at Buckhead or Westchester at Clairmont are two complexes I've been looking at. Any experience with either of these?

paces ferry between peachtree road and piedmont road is an excellent area.
However, that is in the middle of the buckhead nightclub district and my main concern is all the noise. I have not lived in buckhead in 4 years, but when i left, it was very very noisy with people in suv's blasting rap music at earth shattering levels, esp. on thurs-sunday. I have read that it has changed in the last few years but i don't know.

I wouldn't recommend living in downtown. Unlike many downtown in other cities, downtown Atlanta is pretty much ghost town after dark (although there are developers who want to build more residential condos there). In a strange way, midtown/buckhead is more developed area in residential properties than downtown area.
I agree jxu
if I were single with no children that would be were I would choose to live its a very likeable area *and IKEA is close by too*

I stayed in a hotel I believe it was sleep Inn, or it might have been fairfield inn I forgot. But I think it was sleep inn on sidney marcus blvd it was by another hotel. But it wasn't what I expected, everyone told me I would be in a rich area, but I always saw a lot of poor people walking about etc a lot of places I went. But maybe it was the area I was in. God Bless
