Can anyone give me an estimate on the commute time from Dunwoody to Midtown Atlanta during standard rush-hour times? Much appreciated!

Depends on where you're starting from and ending, exactly, but somewhere in the 30-40 minute range.

The train may also work for you. Expect about a 15-20 minute ride, again depending on exactly where in Midtown.

Too many variables to offer much that's going to be useful. A lot will depend on where in Dunwoody you're starting from -- i.e., how long is it going to take you to get to GA 400 or I-285 from where you are (assuming your route involves those). GA 400 is usually not backed up between I-285 and the merge with I-85, so if you're getting on 400 at Abernathy, you won't have problems with that. Delays are highly variable between the 400/I-85 merge and downtown, but you can generally expect to slow down, if not stop completely, through that stretch.

Just guessing, I'd say 30 minutes is probably in the ballpark for most days. Give us a bit more specifics about where you're starting and ending and we can try to refine that estimate.

If you leave your house before 7am, it can take as little at 20 minutes. Up until 7:45 or so, still in the 30-35 min range. 7:45-8:30 more like 40-45 min. The killer is the merge of 400 with 85, then the part where 75 merges in as well. I live on the northern edge of D'woody and probably 6-10 minutes of my time is just getting to 400.

Afternoons getting back home can be highly variable. For the most part you are looking at 35-45 minutes, but if there is an accident all bets are off (just like any other interstate commute). The drive on 85/400 is really not that bad though, usually the longest part is the surface streets portion (ie, getting onto the connector, or getting to your house once you get off 400). There can be a pretty bad back up where 400 crosses under 285, just FYI, but it's not too bad to get up to the Abernathy exit.

Thanks for the responses. I haven't picked a house yet, so I am exploring the areas in and around Dunwoody based on friend recommendations. Looking at a map, Rt 237 (piedmont Ave) would take me right to my office. Is it feasible to take 400 and exit onto 237 for the rest of my ride in to avoid the 400-85 merge?

It is actually more feasible to take Peachtree Industrial straight into the city. By the way, I live in Dunwoody. It's a great place to live.

Where exactly is your office? Piedmont Ave. gets congested as you get closer into the city.

The only thing is that since the OP needs to get to midtown, 400 to 85 S or Rt 13 might be a better option. Peachtree traffic during rush hour is tough, especially since the OP would have to go through Buckhead, its traffic, and stop lights taking the street route to get to midtown.

And, as wxjay mentioned, Piedmont traffic is heavy as well, so it depends on where in midtown you are to avoid getting on the 85. Regardless 400 to Rt 13 (that few miles of freeway that go along the 85 between Peachtree and Sidney Marcus Blvd) might be the best bet.

I would recommend looking into Marta as well. The train ride is approximately 20 minutes and you don't have to worry about traffic. My employer even pays for my monthly pass. The walk to and from the station is good exercise. It works out wonderfully for me.
