Sometimes they just ask and the driver spills the beans. Some people like you will break the law and get away with it and think it's OK. Others like the OP will get caught.

Bottom line is that the law requires you to do many things. Some of us follow the law, and some of us don't. In my case, following the law was not only the correct thing to do, but it was the less costly thing to do. I switched plates as soon as I legally had my new GA address.

A better question for you is: why wouldn't you switch out your plates and DL when you move to a new state? I see people in our building at work that I know live in GA and have been driving on OOS plates for months, sometimes with obviously expired plates. Is it laziness or do you just feel you're above the law?
Because when I orginally came here in January of 1996 I was only supposed to be here through the 1996 Olympics. I was sent here by my employer to work here for that purpose. So that spring when I went back to Illinois, I got my emissions test and paid to renew my plates. in another 6 weeks I accepted a permanent assignment here and was not going to pay again for tags only 6 weeks after I paid Illinois for them. And since my Illinois drivers license did not expire for 2 more years, I did not change that either.

So you made the choice to break the law because it was an inconvenience to you. At least you're honest about being a law breaker.

How about getting pulled over by 2 police cars, one blasting his lights and sirens, and you're not even driving fast. I turned right on a red light after nothing was coming as I had waited for oncoming traffic to go thru the yellow light. I did not see a sign. But what got me was 2 police cars and I had just left Georgia Piedmont, parking tag was very clear.

I guess the quota for the month had to be made, but 2 police cars over a stop sign...SERIOUSLY? Then the other officers stood on the other side of the car watching as if I had a gun and had robbed a bank! It was seriously threatening for a woman who works for the State of Georgia and has no criminal background. It wasn't necessary to try to frighten me or continue to watch me in a threatening manner. I hate driving in Clarkston! The worst small town ever!
