Chamblee probably has a worse school climate than say Lakeside or Dunwoody. But it is probably "safer" than most other DeKalb high schools.
In my opinion, Chamblee is not a good school is your child isn't in the magnet program. Over time, this may improve, but this has been a struggle for years and as of this past school year this is still a huge issue. The administration has tried having the magnet teachers teach non-magnet classes but that doesn't appeared to have solved the challenges.
Once a student is a sophomore, if they are a high achiever and can take AP type classes, then even if not in the magnet program, they can do ok, but still it is a different kind of high school experience.
About 50 percent of students at Chamblee High School come from across DeKalb County, so the kids sitting next to you might live 30 miles away.
A huge percentage of home owners with high school age children, in the Chamblee district, use private schools. In many cases, though, this has to do with proximity and nothing to do with Chamblee High. (In other words, the family moves off Ashford Dunwoody Road to be near Marist, it doesn't matter what the local public school is/was.)
I hope this helps.
