Kev, I agree with you 100%. Just look at the responses from those who said this is normal for a big city. I guess they are fine with crazy killers roaming the streets and being treated with a slap on the wrist. Fulton got like that due to apathy. If they don't have the resources to lock up the worst of the worst, they are an epic fail!

Yes, that woman who gave the boys a ride was "nice" but folks, you cannot be NICE anymore! I don't care how jaded that sounds. Does anyone remember the case about a year ago here in Gainesville (hardly a big city, by the way) of the youth minister who was "nice" and gave a ride to a white couple? Yeah, turns out they stabbed him and ran over him with his own car. He died trying to crawl away.

You have to put yourself and your family first. You have to assume the worst from strangers, white, black, whatever! Our court system is overwhelmed these days due to budget cuts so you can't expect that all the bad guys are behind bars.

People are still so carefree. Look at that poor woman who was out walking last week at 9PM and was abducted while talking on her cell phone with her boyfriend. She told him a car was following her, then he heard a struggle and she screamed "Don't take me!" Gone without a trace. By the way, that happened in extreme rural northeast Georgia in Blairsville.

Fulton County Jail aka Rice Street has an entire floor and a half dedicated to murder suspects, even though the crime this young man is accused is very serious, trust me there are some people up on those floors who are accused of much worse. The Jail is and has been very, very overcrowded for quite some time, they have no choice but to let some people out on bond, it's his right as an American to be considered innocent until proven guilty and being eligible to be released on bond is one of those rights, despite what he is accused of doing (and probably did do it for that matter). The way they decide who gets out on bond is based on the suspect's criminal past among other things, and Im sure the suspect bieng only 16 or 17 had a lot to do with him being granted bond. If he were a 34 year old male who had been in and out of prison a few times I'm sure the judge would have scrutinized his bond request more closely. This has nothing to do with Atlanta.

I think I need to reiterate that he was out on bail. By saying that $250,000 bail is a slap on the wrist you seem to be forgetting that he will either be pleading to a murder charge or be on trial in the near future.

I didn't even notice the bail amount. Someone really loves him to pay 10% of 250K to get him out of jail

Agreed... not everyone charged with a capital offense in a big city can be denied bail... that's the bottom line. If you don't like that, don't live in a big city... or have your city council divert more resources to the building of holding cells. I think blasting the judges is just a knee-jerk reaction to a horrible crime. Of course Cobb and Gwinnet can afford to deny bail -- their jails are not chronically overcrowded... it's not a fair comparison at all. How many murders happen in Cobb/Gwinnett as compared to Fulton?

Is that all it takes? $250K should mean just that, not $25k.

Exactly!

Sure is, not sure why but you only have to put up like 10-15% of the total amount, and thats everywhere, not just here in Atlanta. Still most people dont even have $25,000 laying around to just shell out for something like this. Not sure but I think the way it works is if you skip bail and dont show up for your court date whoever put the money up for you is on the hook for balance of that bail amount, which is why some bail bondsmen require some form of collatoral (spelling?) like a house or something in addition to the 10-15%
