Mabelton is a fairly decent area .And the commute into Atlanta is easy. You won't encounter backed up interstates as much.In fact you can even take surface streets pretty easy all the way into the city(Atlanta).Mabelton is in Cobb County.

That sounds really good. I found a property that looks pretty good there. I'm really starting to narrow this down. Appreciate your input.

Mableton and McDonough are my front runners now but is there anyone out there who can give me an opinion of the River Mill subdivision in Ellenwood? It's high on my list but of course I can't just drive by and check it out. It looks like it's close to River Rd. It looks like it's south of 20, east of 285.

Thanks for the help!

That is in Ellenwood in South DeKalb County.Mostly African American. That area is okay.A lot of subdivisions. You run the whole gambit from wealthy to lower middle class.I have a cousin that lives within 5 minutes of that area.He is a teacher and has lived in his house for 6years.His subdivision is okay but I don't like the fact that they are very close and cookie cutter. The driveways are small so there is parking on the streets because people have a lot of extended family. Some of those sudvisions are really nice but some are so are crowded. And check to see if they have a covenant. Because there is a ghetto element in some parts of the area.Renters every where and sometime section 8.Not saying everyone that is poor or on section 8 is bad,but unfortunately people that are not invested financially in the neighboorhood have nothing to loose as they are just renting.Overall it is not bad.

Very helpful afonega1! I'm coming to Atlanta next week but only for a two day fast turn around trip. This helps me narrow my traveling down. I will check this area out. Thanks

Mableton is generally okay, but there are some areas that are better than others. In general, I think it's safe to say that the further north you go in Mableton, the better off you'll be in terms of crime. Anything north of Veterans Memorial Highway should be fine, and some areas south as well, but you may want to solicit opinions in this forum about specific areas.

Hey there! My husband and I have lived in Stockbridge for almost 2 years now. We like the area a lot. In my opinion there seems to be less crime now than when we first moved here, and I've seen a lot stronger police force out in about the last 5 months... they're cracking down on things like drunk driving, etc... which I'm gathering has left less room for much crime to be going on. We live in the eagles landing area (exit 224 off I-75) and it is very nice. I'm not quite sure about the housing market, as we are renting, but I know there have been a lot of forclosrues around here in the last year!! McDonough is also a very nice area, although I think a little bit pricier. Basically the farther southwest you go from stockbridge the cheaper it is. Locust Grove, Griffin and Hampton are also good areas. I think the average price of houses down there are under $100k but with that comes 15 minutes more commute for your granddaughter. ANYWAY...I just wanted to say that the Stockbridge area is nice...we've never had any break ins, car thefts, or any other type of crime happen to us, and we've enjoyed it here. Unfortunately we are moving to DC in the spring due to my husbands job in the military. The commute from where we are to Clayton State is about 20 minutes..really not too bad. I attend Georgia Perimeter College in Decatur and it's only about 25 minutes (they have a good nursing program!). But, looking on craigslist.com could give you a good idea of housing costs in certain areas. Good luck!

OH! two more things... I would say at least 1/4 of the people who live in Henry county, especially Stockbridge and McDonough, are either in the military or have lived here there whole life... and there are very few rude people/families around here. The other thing is that I have just recently started exploring back roads with friends who were born and raised here... like where there parents or family lives, and areas like Flippen, Kellytown and out off towards Conyers are very nice areas as well. Much more "country" if you prefer that (as are hampton and griffin...oh and Jackson I would say).
I kind of sound like I'm selling the area right? Im actually interested to hear what others have to say about other Atlanta areas. I didn't really even think about a forum like this when I first moved here and I think it would have been helful!
