If you can show me one dealer that actually will give you a quote, let alone bargain over email, i'll give you a car for free

Cityrover, you must be behind the times. I just went to the manufacturer's website - in my case I was looking for a Honda - Request a Quote - the Official Honda Web Site
I used this form to request quotes from 3 local dealers. They all sent me an actual price quote by email, and followed up by email too. One quote was several hundred dollars cheaper than the other two. I emailed back and forth with the sales person, negotiating over a couple of accessories and making arrangements to do my purchase as a "cash for clunkers" deal on the first day of the program, June 24th, which was about 10 days after I originally requested the online quotes.
I agreed with the internet sales person (Cliff Hudson at Hennessy Honda in Woodstock - I'm very happy to give him a plug here, he was excellent) that I'd drop by the dealership to pay a deposit in order for them to bring in a car for me, as they didn't have the color I wanted on the lot. Cliff suggested I also bring in my "clunker" documentation so they could take copies and get an early start on the "clunker" paperwork. They fetched the car I wanted all the way from Jacksonville. Transaction took place as planned on the Friday, and I paid exactly what I'd been quoted in the email.
If this approach to car shopping is unique to Honda, I can only say, good for Honda - they're blazing the way. But I suspect other brands of dealerships are out there doing internet sales too.
Oh, and since you said "show me one dealer", my other quotes were from Curry Honda and Ed Voyles Honda. It's OK, you don't have to give me a car. But I suggest you be a bit more careful what you wager!

Sure. I have the e-mails. Where do I send them to?
And let's make an arrangement to meet at Global Imports BMW in Atlanta so I can pick out my new BMW, ok?

I bought my last car online, it was the most unbelievably awesome car-buying experience of my life. We picked the car we wanted, the price was listed right there on the website. We drove down, test-drove it and bought it the same day. No dickering, no haggling, no B.S. I don't ever want to buy a car any other way.

Oh goody. I love free cars, actually I'd prefer a leather sectional. kthx
This is where we bought our 2004 Honda Odyssey, great price, low mileage vehicle. No haggling, no worries. The car has not given us a moment's trouble.

I tried a similar strategy to get a Fit for my g/f but w/ far less satisfying results. Mr. Hudson's quote had a disclaimer for clunkers and when I asked for a clunkers quote, he added back $1,200 to bring the car back to MSRP. Curry I didn't get a quote from b/c I was nearby. They pushed the car to $700 over MSRP before starting plus they didn't have the color she wanted. I emailed every single dealer in the metro area and all had raised their price above MSRP or they didn't have the right color. Carey Paul's internet guy said they had the right color/options but the car was magically sold in the hr it took us to get there.
Gwinnett Place wouldn't give us a price online but at least when we brought the clunker in, they were fair enough and within a few hundred of what everyone else was getting. They were also the closest dealer and the clunker wasn't going to make it very far so we just called it.
I had far easier experience buying my G35 from Infiniti of Gwinnett. They called when they got the model w/ my exact specs, offered a price lower than anyone else, and made the process completely painless. I took my brother there when he wanted an FX35 to replace the Lexus IS350 his wife totaled last month.

Wow, Mishap, that's terrible. Apparently I was smart and lucky to get in before the clunkers program went live. (I figured things might go kind of crazy - as they did - and I was very determined to use this opportunity to get rid of our Jeep). Thanks for sharing your experience.

Yep, me too. I bought my car on 6/30 - both the end of the month AND before cash for clunker kicked in (my car didn't qualify anyways).

As an Internet saleman of Hondas, the Fit is the one car that demands MSRP that I sell, very limited inventory, very high demand. Go on any independent website like edmunds.com and they will confirm that there is little markup ($500 to $700 from invoice to MSRP depending on trim level) and there are no incentives from Honda on this car.
An Infiniti or Lexus has much, much more markup for a dealer to show a very nice discount and still make a handsome profit. If I sell a Fit for full sticker, it is still a mini deal for me ($100).
