Atlanta Air Quality (article)
Channel 2 news has a story about the air quality rankings in the U.S. Atlanta doesn't fair too well, and strangely, ROME Georgia is pretty high up there, too.

I read the report on the American Lung Association's website and Atlanta news, as usual, is sensationalizing the findings just a bit.
Out of all the testing criteria, Atlanta ranked 13th in one area - "year-round particle pollution". We were tied for 25th in Ozone pollution, and that's not bad when you consider they only tested large metropolitan areas. Heck, in particle pollution - Lancaster, PA is more polluted than Atlanta! Go figure. So is Birmingham.
Check out this link to some of the data charts: http://lungaction.org/reports/sota07_cities.html

Well and of course, if 10 companies did 10 studies, the results would probably come out differently for each, too.
One thing though that doesn't look good - we're only on our second day of "smog season" here today and we're already on a Code Orange smog alert. Sigh.

How far out into the suburbs does the poor air quality spread?

Smog is like haze or smoke and drifts with the winds. Typically there is more junk in the air West of the city as normally winds go from West to East, but as far as Paulding County to the West (25 miles or so) you can see smog conditions on high traffic days.
