Default Friday traffic going up to Helen GA?

We are going with some friends to a cabin in the Helen/Cleveland area this weekend. Directions say to take 85N to 985N to GA-11/US-129.

Anyone know how bad the Friday early evening traffic would be on the 985 and 11/129 portions? That last portion is 20 miles and I fear it's going to be a small road with tons of traffic.

thanks.

You have to worry about 85

985 is pretty much always clear after exit 4, or worst case 8

I'd go in the early afternoon, or after rush hour(s). I did this drive on a Friday in the Spring and it wasn't bad. Traffic was heavy on 85, but it moved along nicely. There was no traffic at all once we got off 985. The sun was just beginning to set when we stopped at the Ingles in Cleveland, so we must've left Atlanta no later than 6:30.

I agree with the consensus. Leaving Atlanta anytime between 3pm and 7pm in any direction on the highway is just a headache. Enjoy Helen! It's really pretty up there. 3

DekalbMe is on a distinguished road
Once you get to 985, you'll be fine. 85 after 3:30 -4:00 can be a bear. 85 does have an HOV lane but that is bad too. 400 N is another option but that will be a bear too up to exit 14ish. Go earlier or later if you can.

Dont exit at Hwy 129 - it is a two lane road and the traffic backs up trying to get through Cleveland. Instead, stay on 985, it will turn into Hwy 365 - still a four lane highway. Travel for about 12 miles on Hwy 365, turn left on Duncan Bridge Rd. (hwy 384). There are signs at the intersection for Helen. Travel about 15 miles and turn right on Helen Hwy, hwy 75. At this point you are north of Cleveland and about 3 miles from Helen. No traffic at all this way!!
