Default High Schools, resale value in College Park?

My husband just got a job in College Park and I had been looking in Cobb County and intown; but, I want to consider College Park/East Point to lessen his commute. I've read really bad things about crime, lack of diversity, etc.

We're an upper middle class Black family with a 15 year old son coming from an upper middle class diverse area in Montgomery County Md. I want to utilize the public school system and I want my son to feel safe traveling to/from sports activities and friends' houses. Also, I'd like some community amenities like Starbucks, whole foods type grocery store, upscale shopping etc. I'd also like a community feel where people communicate and socialize with each other (they don't do that there where I live now...snobbish).

Do I really have to deal with the traffic in order get this type of lifestyle or can I find it in College Park/East Point? Oh, and will i be able to make a profit in 5 or so years?

Then, you will have no problem then.

Most of South Fulton is like P.G. County..in respect of the middle and upper middle class (crime not as bad as P.G.)...

Check out 30331 and 30349...

Their is a Starbucks in Camp Creek Marketplace...The close Whole Foods are in town..bout 20 minutes..166 to 75/85 to Freedom Parkway or North avenue and cut over to Ponce....

Currently, I live in Montgomery County not PG County. I'm not a fan of PG and would prefer not to live a similar area.

What about College Park high schools? Specifically, Tri-Cities and Banneker?

You would probably want to take a look at Westlake and Tri-Cities. If you live in the Camp Creek Area (South Fulton) your son would attend Westlake High School and they have a excellent magnet program. I don't know too much about Banneker.

Yea, I know. I was comparing the 2. More so the income then crime wise (we know how PG County is just #2 behind Baltimore City for murder in MD.) S. Fulton is full of middle and higher income blacks but not as much crime as PG County.

If you don't want a makeup like PG County...look away from S. Fulton..its surely not as diverse as Montgomery County is...

I don't have an idea but you can check out this AJC article on the HS Graduation test results (Just like MD now with the MSA and HSA, not sure which one has been dropped since I graduated)...

In your OP you mentioned Cobb County, as far as High Schools are concerned Cobb has some of the best in the state. I'm not that familiar with Tri-Cities and Banneker, but if you ever considered private school, there are some great schools in College Park, most notably Woodward Academy. I agree with PKCorey that if you are considering South Fulton, those zips are fine but in the 30349 area try to stay west of I-285 and I-85, b/c there you would find newer and bigger subdivisions than east of 285 and 85.

College Park is a little more "ghetto" than PG is outside the beltway, and about the same as PG inside the beltway. As far as schools, I would say Westlake in nearby Soutwest Atlanta is your best choice.

PKC, I misunderstood your earlier post. Thanks for the comparison. Actually, based on that comparison, I don't think that the College Park/East Point area is for us. I found a couple of beautiful, older homes in Historic College Park for an extremely reasonable price and I was hoping that the feedback would be good.

I'm planning a trip to Atlanta in October and will look around College Park; but, I'm think we may stick to intown. Thanks to everyone.

Different in what way? Can you compare it to an area in Mont Co? I'm looking for Bethesda, Chevy Chase, even parts of Rockville and Silver Spring. And, what about the high school? I believe it was Tri Cities. The house is exactly what we can and the price can't be beat. I just need a reason to sign on the dotted line. Please tell me more about Historic College Park near Woodward Academy! Thanks.
