Since I am even more of a geography buff than a sports nut, I like figuring these little tidbits of information. I am sure if either Duke or Raleigh had the same square mileage of city limits as LA and spread over their section of North Carolina like LA does southern CA, all three would fit within the city.
Did a quick map check on Google, driving directions from NC State to Duke is 21.7 miles, to UNC 21.9 miles. Duke to UNC in Chapel Hill is only 10.2 miles.
The interesting thing about this trio is it used to be a foursome. The town of Wake Forest is only 21.4 driving miles north-northeast of the NC State campus and the namesake of the University which at some point in the 60s moved to entirely new digs in Winston Salem. The original college campus in the town of Wake Forest is now a Baptist Seminary

Good observation SaintMarks...
Actually UCLA and USC are even closer than what I thought. The campuses are 15.9 miles from each other

Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass includes all basketball players, coaches, etc.
The College Basketball Hall in KC is separate.
BTW, no offense to Notre Dame and South Bend, but should n't the College Football Hall of Fame be in the South?

I agree that Atlanta is the best choice for this museum based on its location in the heart of college football country. Dallas would be a distant second choice. Dallas only has SMU, a former power but nothing worth noting since its death penalty in the 80s. There are not two major conferences represented here, the closest Big 12 school is Baylor, 90 miles to the south, about the same distance UGA is from metro Atlanta.
The Mountain West (TCU in Fort Worth), Sunbelt (North Texas in Denton) and Conference USA (SMU) are represented in the metroplex. But this doesn't compare to Atlanta, at the crossroads of the SEC (the best sports conference overall) and the ACC (the best basketball conference and not too shabby of a football conference). Neither does Dallas have venerable names like Heisman and Dodd associated with its city.
Dallas would be a more logical choice for a High School Football Hall of Fame. Having lived the majority of my life in these two states, Georgia loves its HS football, but nothing compares to the complete devotion of Texans and their HS football.

A lot of ACC schools do as well. And due to all the transplants, there are also huge alumni bases for Big 10, Big 12, and Big East schools.
I'm a Michigan alum, and we have not only one, but two, alumni bars that are packed every Saturday. I know the same is true for many other schools such as Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, etc.
No other city has such a collection of diehard college football fans, from a diverse fanbase. That is why I said it's the #1 college football city. Take a look at the sports bars in this city on a fall Saturday- they are all packed.

This is very true. I've read that the largest out-of-state alumni groups for every SEC school except for Arkansas is in Atlanta.

Why? Football didn’t start in the South. College football (contrary to parochial thinking here) is popular in many regions of the country.
I am not suggesting that Atlanta is a bad location. In fact it's a solid choice, but let's keep the conversation in reality though....

I just hope Atlanta can get its financing straight, According to the ABC financing has not been finalized, and it may be hard to get additional sponsorship. Both sides have until the end of July to hash things out or walk away from the deal. Questions to answer about College Hall of Fame - Atlanta Business Chronicle:
